Magi Craft Meister 361
“Here it is, please dig in!”
At the center of the round table was a big plate. And on it was,
“….candied sweet potato?”
That’s right, it’s sweet potatoes fried with oil with molasses on… In other words, it really resembled candied sweet potatoes.
“Mm? ‘daigaku’ potato?” (TL note: that’s the pronunciation of it in Japanese)
Saki said, hearing something unfamiliar from Jin.
“A-ah, it’s what they call in the area I am from.”
“Kufufu, that’s interesting. ‘daigaku’ potatoes? I would like hear in detail about why it’s called that but let’s eat for now.”
Saki started taking some of those potatoes to her plate. And while she was doing that, the attendant went around pouring tea.
“Jin, it’s called that over here. Belche was always good at making this from long ago. I had her made it quite a lot.”
“….Yep, it’s delicious. I can tell that Belche’s love to have Reinhart have something delicious is packed in it.”
“Ara, that’s embarrassing.”
Belche blushed. And Saki had already put the 3rd one into her mouth.
“This would be good with some maple syrup on top as well, I think.”
Jin muttered while eating.
People use honey or maple syrup on it as well as molasses. Jin’s suggestion was taken in by everyone present there.
“I see! Maple syrup! Now that I think about it, it might be quite delicious with it!”
“We still have some freshly made itopo so we could try it out.”
It seems the sweet candied potatoes are called itopo here.
By the way, Reiko wasn’t present there as she accompanied Ehr but the SP were there to protect Jin instead. And one among them, Kanna, was sending these info to Laojun.
It goes without saying that after that, itopo—sweet candied potatoes were discovered and sent to the Hourai island.
“Ohhh! This is also delicious!”
“The itopo’s sweetness and the maple syrup’s sweetness goes so well that I don’t know what to say.”
“Jin-sama, thank you for the splendid suggestion.”
Reinhart was happy, Saki was enjoying the taste and Belche expressed her gratitude.
And like this, the tea party ended peacefully.
After having finished their tea, when the 3 of them went to the distant workshop, they found Ehr slowly dancing with Reiko’s help.
She stopped the dance when she heard Jin’s voice and turned around.
“Welcome back, father. Ehr-san is all good now.”
Reiko explained to Jin that since Ehr was able to do clay work without any problem now, she was helping Ehr to slowly get used to the movement.
And just as she had said, clay was on top of the table in different shapes—sphere, cube and even in the shape of a plate.
“But even then, this rapidly?”
Reinhart was surprised.
“Yes. It seems it was simple after learning the ropes.”
“I see. In other words, the sub-control core stocked up on information.”
Jin also observed those actions with interest. He was planning to give Reiko and the others the ‘sense of touch’ soon so he was even more passionate.
“Alright, Ehr, try holding this.”
Jin created a sphere using engineering magic and put it on top of the table. It seemed to be made of iron and therefore felt heavy.
Ehr replied and extended his arms to the sphere and… was splendidly able to pick it up.
“Ooh! That’s amazing, Ehr! ….Now put it down like it was before.”
The metal sphere was returned to the table. And not a sound was made when she did that.
“Reinhart, try holding it.”
Jin said with a mischievous smile, looking at Reinhart.
Reinhart also extended his arms towards it and… splendidly crushed it with his grip.
The sphere was made with a very thin layer of outing. Because he was fooled by the appearance, he put in too much strength and ended up destroying it.
“Hahaha, how is it? After touching and gripping it, Ehr felt it and was able to use the appropriate amount of strength.”
As Jin said happily, Saki was also overjoyed.
“Kufufufu, Jin, I am very curious to see how much this ‘sense of touch’ advances the automata technology!”
Afterwards, Jin and the others returned to the main building with Ehr. And there, Belche was waiting for them with her attendant.
The attendant was holding clothes.
“Reinhart-sama, you mustn’t let the automata be naked all the time.”
Belche pointed at the clothes the attendant was holding.
“Although it may seem quite presumptuous of me, this is the clothing I had prepared for my attendant. It’s new so I want to present it to Ehr as a gift for completion.”
“Ah, thank you…. but, Bel, does Ehr seem like a girl to you?”
Jin and Reinhart looked at each other. Saki laughed a bit and said,
“Miss Belche, Ehr’s gender is neutral. In other words, he isn’t either and he is both at the same time. To being with, automatas don’t have a sex and their gender is decided by their looks so I guess it is kinda obvious.”
“…I see. Oh my, I have jumped to the wrong conclusion. This is embarrassing.”
Jin followed up on that.
“No, Belche-san, Ehr can become a male butler or a female butler depending on the situation. And so, I don’t think your impression is wrong either.”
“Ara, thank you, Jin-sama.”
Afterwards, the decision made after a discussion was that he will be wearing a women’s blouse and a butler’s outfit.
Belche prepared the blouse and Reinhart’s butler, Claude, provided the new butler outfit.
As both of those didn’t fit (Belche’s blouse was too big in the chest portion and short in height and Claude’s outfit was just too big in general) Jin and Reinhart used engineering magic to adjust the size.
“Ohh, it suits him quite a bit.”
He had this atmosphere of a beautiful woman dressing like a man.
“Alright, Ehr, if you help around Reinhart’s house a few days, you will be able to learn the customs and practices of Shouro empire.”
“Understood, creator. I will do my best for my master.”
Seeing Ehr like that, Saki said with a smile,
“Kufufu, I am so excited. Really, Jin, Reinhart, I can’t be thankful enough to you guys.”
“Don’t worry about it, Saki.”
“That’s right. We made it ‘cause we wanted to and it helped me learn a lotta things as well.”
The two answered Saki with a smile.
A few days after that, Ehr helped around at Reinhart’s house and soon learn all the work and customs.
It is only normal since his base is that of Hourai island’s golem maid.
And during that time, Saki stayed over at Reinhart’s place and passed a fulfilling time by creating something and having discussions with Jin and Reinhart everyday.
And then, on May 28th.
Discussion at Reinhart’s workshop after breakfast was a daily thing by then. And there,
“Reinhart, Jin. Ehr is now fully established—no, even more than that, I would say. I think I will be going home now.”
Just when Saki said that,
“Ahh, that’s right. I was thinking of staying over at Saki’s place for a while too.”
As Jin also said that, Reinhart panicked.
“Wa-wait a minute, you two! What’s this all of a sudden?! Did I do something wrong?”
After a while of silence, Jin broke the ice.
“No, Reinhart, have you forgotten? You will hold a ceremony with Belche, right?”
Saki followed up as well.
“That’s right, Reinhart. Kufufu, you shouldn’t make a lady wait too long, you know.”
“As such, ah—right, I will stay over at Saki’s place for like a week to 10 days.”
“Kufufu, Reinhart, no need to worry about me. I have come to understand Jin quite well over the past few days.”
“You two… you’re being considerate of me? Well, actually…”
Reinhart told them how he was planning to hold the marriage ceremony 3 days from now.
“But can you prepare in 3 days?”
Jin was concerned.
“Ah, that will be fine. I hadn’t told you guys before but I was moving forward with the plan of holding the ceremony on June 1st to begin with.”
“Oh, what now? Then there’s no need to worry, is there?”
Jin said with a relieved laugh.
Magi Craft Meister 360
After lunch, Jin, Reinhart, and Saki returned to the workshop, but Belche ended up staying behind.
Reinhart had told her that he felt sorry for dragging her along, and that she didn’t need to go back to the workshop with them.
But Belche replied that she wanted to accompany him, no matter how boring it might be.
“I’d love to have some of your specially prepared sweets for our 3 o’clock tea time, Bel. It’s been a while.”
Since Reinhart had asked her, she decided to stay behind and wait for them with some sweets for tea time.
“Well then, next is the skin, face, and hair, right?”
Asked Reinhart while taking materials from the shelves.
“Saki, do you have any requests?”
Saki thought hard about that.
“Hmm, I don’t have anything particular in mind… but if I had to choose, I think I’d like it to have light-blue eyes. As for its hair, light blonde, and short.”
The first thing that came to Jin’s mind when hearing that was Elsa’s face. He then started to work immediately.
Without having anything particular in mind, he used Elsa as a model, but with a more neutral-gendered face.
Reinhart played the role of an assistant. He was closely observing Jin’s ability, eager to learn from his crafting technique.
Since it was a rather meticulous effort, it took them about an hour to complete the automata’s exterior, but they had done a magnificent work.
“Hmm, hmm! Good, good! I like it a lot! It’s fantastic, Jin!”
Only the fine details remained: adjusting the speaking device and its voice quality, tuning its vision and hearing, and so on.
“Jin, what should we do about the Control Core? And, are we copying someone else’s behavioral patterns, like how you did with Lotte?
Lotte is a maid golem that was commissioned to Jin by his good friend, Earl Kuzuma, for the exclusive use of Prince Ernest, back in the Egelia Kingdom.
On that occasion, he copied the behavior and knowledge from the head maid of the Kuzuma household.
“Oh, I’ve come prepared this time.”
Jin took out a Magi Crystal prepared for storing information from his pocket, which will serve as the automata’s master reference.
This is the same thing used for the five-colored maid golems back in Hourai Island.
“‘Trans-info’ Level 6.”
With this, the automata will be able to provide the highest level of household services, just like the ones in Hourai Island. In short, it will be able to prepare Jin’s favorite dishes. That, in fact, was one of the main reasons to make it like this.
Then, an Ether Tank and an Ether Driver will be used for its power source, just like in Elena’s case.
“What’s that, Jin?”
It was the first time Reinhart had seen that Magi Device. So, Jin explained.
“Well, there’s this automata called Elena… with this, she can operate semi-permanently.”
“Ah, if only we had some ether…“
This type of technology was also present during the Great Magic War, and automata such as Ann and Tia used to be equipped with an Ether Converter and a Mana Driver.
It is older than the current equipment used with Houran Island golems and automata, but it’s usable enough.
“Oh, so you will be storing ether in its Ether Tank, and changing it into magic with the Ether Driver? Very interesting!”
Saki was staring at the two of them work while mumbling such things.
It was completed a little before tea time.
“All right, let’s start it up. Reiko, can you share some of your ether?”
The Ether Converter in Reiko’s body has an added function to collect ether. Because of this, Reiko has a considerable amount of ether inside her body.
The Engineering Magic ‘Transmit’ is rarely used, but it’s mostly used to activate Ether Converters when there is no Mana Driver present.
Since this new automata was not created for battle, it has a small Ether Tank. For this reason, it was filled up very quickly, and soon they were able to start up the Ether Driver.
Jin said the activation keyword, and the automata opened its eyes.
“Nice to meet you, Creator.”
Since the one who created the Control Core was Jin, he was considered the Creator by the automata’s system.
“All right, your master is Saki Eschenbach.”「よし、お前の主人はこのサキ・エッシェンバッハだ」
“Yes. Saki Eschenbach-sama, I’m in your care.”
Since the voice was adjusted to be neutral, Jin thought that it sounded as if a woman was playing a male role in a play.
The automata then turned to Saki, and greeted her with a bow.
“Saki, can you give it a name?”
After hearing Jin’s question, Saki, who was feeling nervous about being referred to as a master by an automata for the first time, suddenly came to her senses and started thinking.
“A name… Hmm…“
Before long, Saki raised her head as if an idea had just hit her, and said a name.
“All right, let’s call you ‘Ehr’.”
“Yes, Master. My name is ‘Ehr’.”
That was not a name you would hear that often.
“Yeah, I remembered that in a book I read a long time ago, the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, were written as Yee, Ehr, Zan, Su… The second one in the world was 2, which was called ‘Ehr’.”
Reinhart was honestly delighted, but Jin had his doubts.
“Say, Saki, what kind of book is it? I also know how to count in that system… Yi, er, san, si, wu, liu, qi, ba, jiu, shi… “
“Oh, that’s quite similar, huh? But I’m sorry, Jin, I don’t know. Those were some old documents, and one particular book among them had only up to the number four written that way. There was no hint of it being a counting system or anything in the first place.”
Jin desisted to push the matter any further after hearing Saki’s explanation. Those numbers were strangely similar to how the numbers are pronounced in Chinese, for some reason.
“… I see. I’m the one who’s sorry, Saki. It was a weird question. Let’s just focus on Ehr for now.”
“All right, Ehr, try to stand up.”
Saki began giving instructions to Ehr.
Ehr stood up… or so he thought. The table fell with a loud noise. Ehr had stumbled and, trying to support himself on the table, ended up bringing it with him to the floor.
“Ah, are you okay?”
“Yes, master. I am fine.”
As he said that, he tried to stand up once again, but he fell to the floor once more. To Jin, it appeared that the control system was not working properly.
“All right, Ehr, just sit down for now.”
Jin also took a seat and thought of a task to give Ehr in order to test the condition of his control system.
To that end, he asked Saki to prepare some clay.
“Okay, Ehr. Try to shape this clay into a dumpling.”
Ehr said yes, reached out to the clay… and crushed it in his hand.
Seeing that, Reinhart expressed his disappointment.
“It’s a failure, Jin. He can’t control his strength at all.”
But Jin had a different opinion about it.
“Ehr, take your time. Try as many times as you want.”
As instructed, Ehr takes some clay with his hands. And then, he ends up crushing the clay every time.
“… It’s no good, Jin. What could have gone wrong?”
Contrary to Reinhart’s discouragement, Jin’s eyes were fixed on Ehr’s movements.
“Is it just my imagination, Jin? I have a feeling that Ehr is becoming more and more dexterous every time…“
Just as stated, though little by little, Ehr seemed to remember the degree of strength with which he held the clay in his hands.
And ten minutes later, Ehr managed to make a perfect dumpling out of clay.
“So that’s what’s happening…“
“Jin, I can’t make heads nor tails of this by myself. Please explain it to me!”
Both Reinhart and Saki were worried about not fully understanding what was going on. Jin told them his opinion on the matter.
“I’m thinking that perhaps the signal sent from tactile sensors are not in line with the control formula I prepared.”
In Jin’s calculations, the control formula contained information passed down from an earlier generation model. So it’s only natural that the newly designed sense of touch was not considered in that formula.
At first, Ehr’s control system does not know how to properly handle unknown information like the sense of touch.
Then, after getting ‘used’ to it over time, he finally managed to roll up a piece of clay successfully.
“I see, that makes sense!”
“I’m not so sure I fully understand, but do you mean that Ehr is not used to his body yet?”
“That’s what I think. That’s why for now I think it’s best to let Ehr learn his movements little by little, like a baby.”
“Reinhart-sama! It’s time for tea! It’s a little late, so I came to pick you up.”
Since Belche called them out for tea, Jin and the others left Ehr to continue with his exercises with clay and left for the main wing of the house for tea.
(Reiko, just to make sure, keep an eye on Ehr.)
Jin couldn’t forget to give a quick instruction to Reiko with a low voice.
Magi Craft Meister 359
12-09 The world’s second-best automata
The next day, Jin and Reinhart went to the workshop after having breakfast.
This time though, they were joined by Belche and Saki, the latter having spent the night at Reinhart’s house.
“Well then, let’s start with the skeleton.”
The night before, Jin and Reinhart had discussed the technical specifications of the automata after dinner.
＊ ＊ ＊
“How about neuter gender?”
“Do you mean making it without either a male or female shape?”
“Yes, that’s right. I mean, how much sense does it really make to add a definite gender to the automata in the first place?
When he said that, Jin hadn’t realized that Reiko was standing behind him with a slightly lonely expression to her face.
“Although the basic frame is a male one, right?”
“That’s right. Let’s just try to make it slender overall, and with a little longer hair.”
“For example, it would normally serve as a butler, but it could also wear female clothes in order to also serve as a maid if need be.”
“I see! That’s interesting! So it can be used for multiple purposes!”
＊ ＊ ＊
“The skeleton should be made out of aluminum.”
Just as she heard that, Saki spoke up as if surprised.
“Hey, Reinhart! You say aluminum, but a kilogram costs two million torr!”
As expected from an alchemist, Saki has a keen understanding of the market value of such high-grade materials. … And yet she has no sense of economy.
“Ah, don’t worry about that. Jin has donated the materials.”
“You’ll get used to it sooner or later. It’s useless to stick to preconceived ideas when it comes to Jin.”
Reinhart laughed as he told her that, but Saki stood in silence for a minute, as if trying to digest what she has just heard.
“… Hehe, I see, Reinhart. You got me there. To believe that it is impossible to discover new things within the common knowledge of this world is the alchemist’s creed. I’m so embarrassed…“
She then consented with an unusually relieved face.
Belche was not as surprised since even though her sense of economy was not as poor as Saki’s, she didn’t know as much about materials.
The suspended work resumes.
Its intended height is 160 cm. That’s just as hight as Jin, and only a little higher than Saki.
It has a slender body, and its target weight is 50 kilograms.
“First comes the skeleton. I’ve seen Jin’s work with golems, so I had a lot of things to consider.”
After saying that, he prepared a lump of aluminum. As a matter of fact, Jin had brought it from Hourai Island in the middle of the night.
Then, Reinhart begins to shape it. Jin also made things together with Reinhart several times in the past, but this is his first time seeing him use Engineering Magic with such seriousness.
Reinhart is considerably skilled, and it was evident that studying Jin’s way of doing things was not just for show.
The basic skeleton was completed in about fifteen minutes.
“What do you think, Jin? I want to hear your opinion.”
Jin then shared his honest thoughts with Reinhart.
“Impressive, Reinhart! I’m only taking a quick look, but I can see you’ve put a lot of detail into it! If I have to say something about it, it’s the fingers and wrists. You’ve used ball joints, but their movements seem heavy.”
After expressing his thoughts to Reinhart, Jin applied a fine coating to the joints using a small lump of adamantite.
“Oh, I see! You’re decreasing the amount of wear that the joints will get over time by making their movements lighter. I really need to study more.”
After that, Saki could no longer watch silently and interrupted them.
“Guys, I’m sorry to break into your passionate work, but let me ask you something. … Is that based on the human skeleton?”
Jin was the one to answer that question.
“Yes, that’s right. Automata are created by imitating humans. So what else would you use to imitate a skeleton?”
Groaning with a ‘Hummm’, Saki carefully looked at the skeleton that was lying on the workbench.
“Its ribcage and pelvis have been simplified, huh? … I’m sorry for barging in. Please continue.”
Then it was Jin’s turn. He arranged the Magic Muscles made out of Magic Fiber onto the frame.
As he was carefully installing the muscle, Jin suddenly wondered how his predecessor must have obtained such understanding of human anatomy.
Reinhart and Saki had their full attention set on Jin’s ability. The only one who seemed as if she was not really getting what was going on was Belche.
The muscle installation was completed in about five minutes. Taking Jin’s ability into account, he took it fairly easy.
“Oh, Jin! That was amazing! Thanks for showing me your skill!”
Reinhart said that as he excitedly slapped Jin’s shoulder.
“I’ve learned a lot from you, Jin.”
Saki calmly expressed her gratitude.
After that, by using previously prepared Magic Nerves made with mithril silver, they prepared the automata’s control core.
Though Reinhart said it might be no longer necessary, Jin decided to try to add a shield structure to it just to make sure, since he knew of the existence of monsters.
“Well then, it’s finally time to install the tactile sensors!”
Reinhart said cheerfully, and Jin agreed.
“Ohoho, it’ll be the first one to have this kind of features!”
Saki’s face is also full of expectations. Only Belche has a constant『?』on her face.
A total of 40 tactile sensors were prepared in advance for this project. The first sixteen of them are arranged as follows: two for the palm of each hand, and two for each sole, for a total of eight. And five for the chest and stomach, three for the back, and lastly, two for the buttocks, for a total of ten.
Though these many sensors ensure that the overall functionality doesn’t decline that much even if a few of them get damaged, the real purpose for this number of sensors is to make it possible to calculate the center of stimulation from the strength of the signal provided from each sensor.
Four more sensors on each arm and leg, for a total of sixteen more. And five more for the head. That completes the original layout.
“Hmm, there’s one left, should we keep it as a spare?”
As Jin said that, Saki came up with an idea.
“Let’s try to use all of them, just for the sake of experimenting. What about inside the mouth?”
“Hmm, I see. That way it might sense when it’s biting something. That might be a good idea.”
With that, all of the 40 tactile sensors have been installed.
They will send tactile information to a dedicated sub-control core, where the information will be organized and sent over to the main control core.
This should reduce the burden on the main control core and enable more delicate physical control.
“Reiko, check the magic flow using Trace and Inspection. Reinhart and I will stimulate each of the sensors.”
Reiko’s strongest field is precision work such as measurement.
Jin and Reinhart stimulated the tactile sensors at various locations simultaneously and sometimes separately, and followed the magic signals emitted from them were sent to the sub-control core to be processed.
Such repetitive work took two hours. For the time being, they obtained convincing results, so they decided to proceed with the next step.
“Everyone, it will be lunch time soon. Let’s take a short break and have lunch.”
Belche, who’s had nothing to do so far, called them out while checking a sundial in the garden.
“Oh, is it that time already?”
“Time sure flies when you’re completely focused on something, huh?”
“Ohoho, you’re totally right!”
The three of them stopped working and spoke their minds in a similar way.
“I’m sorry, Belche. This must be really boring to you.”
Reinhart washed his hands after saying that, and gently hugged Belche’s shoulders.
“… Well, if it’s you, Reinhart… I can’t say anything when you speak like that!”
As Belche said that, she put on a rather sulky face, and placed her head over Reinhart’s shoulder.
Both Jin and Saki smiled, seeing those two standing together without moving.
“… Look at those lovebirds.”
“Oh, relationships are definitely a beautiful thing, huh?”
Saki and Jin looked at each of them, and after narrowing their eyes, they expressed their thoughts. Relationships are indeed a good thing.
Before long, Reinhart first notices and releases his hand holding Belche’s shoulder. By that action, Belche turned to herself, and her face went red as she saw Jin and Saki staring at them with a smile.
“Ah, Reinhart-sama, let’s have lunch.”
“Uh, ah, right, Bel. … Jin, Saki, let’s go have lunch.”
While trying to hide his own embarrassment, Reinhart and called out Jin and Saki, and headed to the main wing of the house.
Magi Craft Meister 358
After hearing the situation with the Marquis, Jin was shown around Reinhart’s workshop.
As expected, there are no rare materials like in Hourai Island, but he is well supplied on materials such as aluminum, mithril, adamantite, and so on.
“Ok, first of all, how about we discuss the basic plans for the Automata?”
At Jin’s suggestion, the two of them returned to the table.
“Let’s decide its appearance. Whether it will be a male or female model, its apparent age, and size.”
Because it’s intended to be Saki’s own automata, it was essential to make it so that it looked like something Saki would like. That’s what Reinhart is counting on.
“Hmm, what Saki would like… I’m not that sure, really. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that girl speak about such things…“
Then, he added something he had just remembered.
“She’s really fond of Elsa.”
Reluctant to make comments like ‘Oh? She has that kind of preference?’ and so on, a sore silence came between the two.
“Oh, I knew it! You two were here! Well, dinner preparations are almost over!”
Belche had come looking for the two of them.
Seemingly saved by that cheerful voice, the two left their seats.
＊ ＊ ＊
As they arrived at the dining room, they found Saki standing there. But she looked different.
The charcoal-colored hair, once unkempt and ruffled, is now lustrous and tidily combed. Her once messy hair ends are now cleanly cut. And the beauty of her purple-gray eyes, which used to be partially covered by her bangs, could now be seen clearly. Her round glasses look charming, too.
Her cheeks are now slightly covered with rouge, and her once unhealthy complexion is now bright and cheerful.
And instead of her usual dirty clothes, she was wearing a white dress.
That was Jin’s reaction.
“It really suits you, Saki.”
And that was Reinhart.
“… She wouldn’t let me go unless I put on this costume and makeup.”
Having muttered that, Saki hurriedly looked away in embarrassment, and her cheeks turned red.
Jin, Reinhart, Belche, and Saki sat at the round table where dinner was served.
At Reinhart’s request, it was all arranged so that Jin didn’t have to worry about being poor at formalities.
Saki knew her table manners properly and had her meal in a more polite fashion than Jin.
During the meal, Saki was somewhat tense. After the meal, and some harmless conversation over a cup of tea, she was able to relax and return to her usual mood.
“Ohoho! How long has it been since I last looked like this? This style really doesn’t suit me at all!”
“No, Saki-san, it really suits you very well. Doesn’t she, Reinhart-sama?”
“Yes. It’s not just compliment, you do look good on it.”
“… Do you think? If you say so, Reinhart… is this appearance a bit more pleasant to see?”
“Not just a bit. You’re beautiful enough.”
“Ohoho! Should I be happy or sad about that? What a delicate situation! Appearance is not important at all for studying, though.”
Saki was feigning indifference with such comments, though.
“Besides, those on your face, those ‘eyeglasses’, were they? They’re very charming!”
“Thank you. Jin made them for me. They have changed the way I see the world.”
“That’s right! Could you lend me the eyeglasses for a moment, Saki?”
Jin said that as if it just had struck his mind, and Saki handed him the eyeglasses.
“Thank you. ‘Hardening’. ‘Toughen’.”
Jin used Hardening on the frame, and then used Toughen on the crystal lenses.
“This should do it. The lenses are rather fragile, so I used Engineering Magic on them in order to make them harder.”
“Haha, that’s good. Saki can be quite careless sometimes.”
Saki put her eyeglasses back on without even answering Reinhart’s remark, though she did give him a sulky look. She then suddenly changed the topic.
“Speaking of which… what is your cousin up to? Normally, it wouldn’t be weird to find her sitting here with us.”
The cousin that Saki was referring to was Elsa.
The fact that Elsa had disappeared, was saved by Jin, and was now staying in Kaina Village in the Klein Kingdom, was a secret that only Jin and Reinhart knew.
“Uh, that, um…“
Reinhart was too hesitant to say.
“Huh? What’s wrong, Reinhart? What’s with that face? Did something happen to your cousin?”
“… Let me explain. … Elsa-san was unhappy with her engagement, and ran away.”
They hadn’t told Belche anything about it either, so this is as much as she knew.
“Ran away? Elsa? … Engagement, you say? Could it be… the engagement to that marquis?”
Saki seems to be hating her own family, calling her own grandfather “that marquis” with such a tone.
And she also seems to know about the devious preferences of his grandfather, Marquis Gehlen Theoderic Von Aizen.
Reinhart’s silence only made Saki more irritated, as she now knew that her guess was correct.
“… That damned marquis and his perverted taste for young girls! Elsa is old enough to be his granddaughter! Good grief, just how selfish can he be?”
Then she stared at Reinhart.
“Hey, Reinhart, knowing you, you’re probably hiding Elsa and not telling anyone about it. But that doesn’t mean you don’t know where she is or how she is doing, right?”
After hearing that, Jin, who had been silently listening to that exchange, was impressed by Saki’s intuition.
Breaking the silence, Saki stopped acting tough and smiled at Reinhart.
“… I’m sorry, Reinhart. If that’s the case, there’s no reason for me to say such things. My bad. … That cousin of yours seems to be somewhat interested in alchemy, so when she returns we can arrange for me to teach her a lot of things, okay?”
Saki’s had a lonely looking face as she said that. Reinhart did not want to talk about the truth of the situation, and unintentionally kept his poker face due to the skills he had fostered as a diplomat.
“Oh, that’s right, Jin-sama, and also Reiko-chan, would you like to sing a song?”
Belche had proposed such a thing in order to change such a heavy atmosphere. Jin understood that intention as well, and gave his orders.
“Reiko, sing something.”
Reiko began to sing.
In fact, since a few days ago, whenever he had free time, Jin has been teaching Reiko some songs in an attempt to give her some talents that any regular girl would normally have.
“What is the name of the flower that blooms in the spring? Though nobody tells me I like those flowers of the field that bloom gently…“
Belche, Sakim and Reinhart all were charmed by Reiko’s singing voice.
“If you pick up a handful of them Give them to your beloved boyfriend If your boyfriend doesn’t come Let them wash away by the river…“
The director used to use many popular Showa-Era-like songs instead of background music so much, that Jin remembers it quite well. Among those songs, Jin taught Reiko the ones that the idols used to sing.
“Autumn leaves fall to my shoulders Softly they fall on the ground I wonder what is he up to Is he thinking about me?…”
After finishing her song, Reiko bowed with a curtsy.
The one to begin the round of applause was Reinhart. He was soon followed by Belche, and then Saki came to her senses and applauded as well.
The maids Beth and Dolly, who were there serving as waitresses, also gave Reiko a heartfelt round of applause.
“Reiko-san, how lovely! I’m fascinated!”
Neon spared no praises as well.
“…Thank you, Neon-san.”
Reiko thanked Neon with a seemingly happy but troubled face.
“Well! Jin, Reiko is absolutely wonderful! The word ‘perfect’ suits her completely!”
Reinhart also gave his compliments without reserve.
Once the atmosphere had completely calmed down, Jin asked Reinhart something he had been concerned about.
“Reinhart, Belche-san. When do you plan to have your wedding ceremony?”
Hearing that, Belche, who was sitting next to Reinhart, felt her face go completely red. Reinhart’s face seemed troubled.
“Hmm, that’s a difficult question. It’s scheduled for early June, but at any rate I’m at your service now, so…”
“Are you worried about that? I’ll have you known that I’ll be fine if you leave me alone for a few days.”
Of course, when that happens, it’s just a matter of returning to either Kaina Village or Hourai Island.
To know that made Reinhart’s face look even more troubled. However, he soon put a smile on his face and answered.
“Thank you, Jin. I will keep that in mind.”
After that, Reinhart’s focus shifted to tales about their journey, and about the old days.
When talking about the kidnapping by the Unifiler, Berce covered her face, though she could be heard to be crying.
We dramatized the story about the rescue and attributed said rescue to Deus Ex Machina.
Saki was lost in trance as she listened.
However, what Saki was most interested in was the story of the battle between the Gigas and Reiko.
“Hmm, so Reiko-chan is that strong, huh? That’s really amazing. I know that Reinhart is the best in the world, though.”
“That’s right. … But Reinhart-sama, don’t do to many dangerous things, okay? If something were to happen to you, I would not be able to live anymore.”
Belche was clinging to Reinhart’s arm as she said that.
“Ohoho! Belche and Reinhart are as close as usual! You seem to have a great relationship, you two.”
For a moment, on Saki’s face, there was that same lonely looking smile that Jin had been worrying about.
Having said that, Jin magically created two bottles out of crystal and filled them with the remaining maple syrup.
The bottles are quite expensive. The lid is also made of crystal. They are not the type of bottles that usually contain ingredients, but considering the rarity of their contents (for now), they seem to be appropriate.
Reinhart said nothing about it, and since it appears that Saki has also grown used to Jin’s outwardness, she also did not say a word.
“All right, let’s go to Reinhart’s house with one of these.”
“Oh, that’s right. I’ll need a sample when I speak to Father about this.”
And so, Jin, Reiko, Reinhart, and Saki rode on Jin’s carriage, heading to the Randall residence.
“Welcome back, Reinhart-sa… ma?”
At the house, Belche had come out to meet them, but her face changed when she saw Saki.
“Hey, Belche! Long time no see! Congratulations on your engagement with Reinhart!”
But Saki paid no mind to her sudden change of expression and greeted her like that anyway.
“That look you have! What are you doing, looking like that!?”
Belche’s voice sounded as if completely shocked.
“That unkempt hair! That dry skin! Those dirty clothes! That posture! … Oh my… you even smell a little!”
Belche judged Saki’s appearance from top to bottom.
“Reinhart-sama, you must be hungry. However, please wait for about one hour!”
Having said that, she left that place, dragging Saki along with her.
“Ha ha! Belche and Saki have known each other for quite a while now. Saki may also look delicate to Belche, too.”
Saying that, and looking at the two of them leaving, Reinhart laughed.
“Jin, it may be a while before Belche and Saki return, so in the meantime, would you like to come to see my workshop?”
After such an invitation, there could be no doubt in Jin.
Reinhart’s workshop was in the middle of the courtyard. It was independent of the rest of the house. The pathway to the workshop was built with walls and a roof, so one can come and go without getting wet on rainy days.
“Oh, how big!”
The workshop was about twenty tatamis wide, which is considerably spacious.
“This is where I built the Schwartz Ritter.”
Said Reinhart with a large nod.
“Well, have a seat.”
Reinhart offered Jin a chair that was next to a table in a corner of the workshop.
“We can talk without hindrances here.”
It appeared as if they were going to talk about something important. However, Reiko’s presence was not a bother to them.
“I think I should talk to you about this, Jin.”
With that preface, Reinhart started talking.
“Saki’s mother is dead now, but she was the eldest daughter of the marquis.”
They’ve suddenly started talking about such a serious matter.
“Look, that’s the marquis Elsa was proposed as a bride to. Marquis Gehlen Theoderic Von Aizen. His territory is to the west of ours.”
That eldest daughter and Saki’s father fell in love, ran away together, and in the end, Saki was born.
“Let me tell you something about marquis Theoderic. … How should I put it? The Marquis… erm, he likes women who are on the small side.”
Although it was somewhat difficult for Reinhart, he managed to explain that the Marquis has a preference for young girls that are just becoming women.
“So, now he has three, no, four children counting Saki’s mother. However, they are all women. It seems that the lack of a male heir troubles him. For that reason, and because his own wife has passed away, he has had his eyes on Elsa for a while now.”
It seems that Reinhart has been gathering all sorts of information since his return to his home town.
“I see… so, what about Saki?”
“Ah, I’ve strayed from the point. Now, Saki’s father, Toa Eschenbach, has become one of the top expert alchemists in the country, so he doesn’t show any resentment in public. I can tell as much because he lives right across the next territory.”
“Oh, I see.”
“However, he seems to treat Saki as if she was but a cute granddaughter, and is often trying to have our household take her under our care. But Saki refuses him every time, and continues to live over there.”
Reinhart laughed, with a little hint of sadness.
“When it comes to the Marquis’ family, there’s only so much that the Earl’s family can do.”
That is the way of feudal society.
“A Marquis’ word is only overturned by the prince, and then by the Emperor. Although it does not necessarily mean that it is against the law, you cannot simply say no to a Marquis’ will. Be it marrying Elsa, or having Saki taken under our care.”
The Emperor is not a dictator. It is a matter of simply not being able to doing anything similar to disregarding the customs and laws of this land.
“Well, I hope I haven’t troubled you by talking about this with, Jin. But since there may be something up ahead, I thought about telling you so you could keep it in mind. … I’m sorry, though.”
Reinhart finished his speech with a nod.
There were so many troublesome things already, but even though they’ve just become acquainted, Jin was already fond of Saki. So Jin simply said ‘It’s nothing’ and laughed.
Magi Craft Meister 357
12-07 New device
Jin explained the new Automata and Golem control theories.
“Hmm, I understand the theory, but does it go so smoothly in practice?”
Reinhart had his doubts.
“Jin, I can sympathize with your reasoning. If there’s anything I can do to help, I sure will!”
Said Saki, showing her support.
One could say this was another difference between Reinhart, who puts things into practice, and Saki, who thinks purely and solely in theories.
In short, Reinhart knows how hard it is to put theory into practice.
“Jin, I can understand your theory. But, first of all, how do you reproduce the ‘sense of touch’? I think you should start from there.”
Reinhart had held him in doubt, but Jin had an explanation.
A small device called ‘Strain gauge’. It can detect as far as one-millionth of a strain. The fundamentals behind it are omitted in the explanation, but it is a device essential to machine control.
Jin was trying to reproduce this device with materials found in this world.
If he managed to reproduce it, it could be attached to several places of the body, and the amount of pressure to the body could be known by detecting those strains. And that’s what basically the ‘sense of touch’ is.
Jin added one more thing at the end of his explanation of these operating principles:
“It would be wonderful if there some sort of material whose magical properties changed drastically as it bends or deforms.”
“Hmm, its magical properties, huh…?”
Actually, Jin has some knowledge of one such material. Wing membranes of a Sea Dragon. It’s what was used as a material for Reiko’s skin.
However, since it is not as prevalent, it seems it can only be used to improve Reiko.
“… There is one.”
Having said that, Saki produced a crystal out of the shelf.
The translucent crystal was cross-sectioned, and it had a red interior with an emerald green surface. It looked like a watermelon.
“Ah, a watermelon tourmaline, right…?”
Jin muttered that spontaneously. A long time ago, a certain girl he cared about was wearing small pendants that looked like that crystal.
Saki and Reinhart reacted to different words. Incidentally, the one to react to ‘Tourmaline’ was Reinhart.
“Oh, a Watermelon is large fruit with a hard, green skin, and a red interior. A tourmaline… is a kind of stone.”
“Hmm, this ‘watermelon’ you speak of sounds like a Shiika. Which reminds me that it is Skiika seedling planting season.”
According to Saki, Shiika are planted every year in her garden, and by summertime, they are ripe for harvesting and eating.
Jin wanted to obtain one of those seeds or seedlings since he thought it would be nice to have either one of them. Naturally, it has already been decided that these wishes will be transmitted to Reiko, who, by contacting Laojun, will be given new instructions by the fifth-row Quinta, who in turn have been dispatched anew to the Shouro Empire.
Now, let’s return to our story.
“This stone is called Elbite. By applying force to it, it generates a very small amount of magical power. Could this be of any use?”
As Saki explained, Jin nodded.
“Oh, well then, let’s try slicing off a thin sheet of this crystal, and attach a mithril thread to it!”
Soon after obtaining Saki’s permission, Jin sliced the ‘Elbite’ with Engineering Magic.
“Hmm! It sure is nice to have a Magi Engineer around! I can hardly use any magic myself, so I’m glad!”
Saki went on rambling about things such as ’Analysis’ and ‘being able to feel magical power’.
“Okay, Saki, please hold this mithril thread. I’m going to try applying force to this slice of Elbite over here.”
“All right, Jin.”
A fragment of Elbite tied to a one-meter mithril thread. Jin placed his hand of the slice and pressed with his fingers.
“How about it?”
“Well, there’s some magical power springing forth over here.”
“That is great! Our first trial is a success!”
At that point, Reinhart, who had been silently looking from the sides, seemed to not be able to stand it any longer.
“Hmph! Jin, Saki! L-Let me help too! How should I put it? It’s unthinkable to try nothing more than just pressing it with your fingers! This is the birth of a new technology we’re talking about!”
Reinhart still appears to be a Magi Engineer, after all.
And then, the three of them repeatedly experimented with the Elbite, changing its thickness and size, in order to decide on its optimal shape.
Because of that, in that same evening, a ‘tactile sensor’ prototype was completed.
“Let’s build an automata using this. I will give this first prototype automata to Saki.”
Jin and Reinhart agreed. Saki could not argue with them.
“Huh, well, if you two say so. Besides, there are many tests I want to run.”
Noticing that it was getting dark outside, they decided to wrap things up for the day.
“Reiko, how much maple syrup was produced?”
“Father, this is all there is.”
In the pot that Jin had created were about seven servings. He wondered if it was approximately one liter.
“All right, let’s split it between two bottles.”
o“They detect the deformation between the target and their fingertips.”
“Eh? ….is that so, Jin?”
Reinhart asked. It seems it was also his first time hearing that.
“The control core is ordering the body after estimating how much strength should be put in. And the body moves after that—a very short period of time, about 0.001 seconds later.”
Saki and Reinhart were both listening quietly.
“Once the finger touches the object, the finger movements slow down depending on the hardness of the object. If they object is soft, it’s harder for the core to process and it is harder to slow down. If it is hard, then it becomes slow quicker. They detect and calculate all these really quick and apply the necessary force.”
“By the way, they do mistake the force sometimes… After all, humans also sometimes drop stuff after holding them ‘cause they seem lighter. However, since their reaction speed is dozen times faster than that of a human’s, in most cases, they make it in time.”
After explaining that far, Jin looked at both their faces.
Like a magi engineer, Reinhart was digesting the information he just heard but Saki was fine with just understanding the concept.
“I see, Jin, thanks! One of my long lasting questions just got answered!”
Saki was overjoyed.
“They can do that because the control core is much faster than humans at thinking, right?”
“Yep, that’s right.”
Jin nodded to Saki’s question.
“If so, then the control core is dealing with difficult stuff like how the body should behave, eh?”
“Yep, yep…. Mm?”
Jin thought over Saki’s question once again.
Generally, things follow the ‘simple is best’ principle. Even more so if it’s a system.
“Jin? Is something the matter?”
Saki called out to Jin, seeing him fall silent all of a sudden but the words didn’t reach Jin’s ears.
(For the action of determining the strength, most of the control core’s processing power is being used. In other words, it is being left to the software…)
Jin wasn’t really knowledgeable in the electronics engineering or IT field but he did have the general knowledge a normal person living in the current world would have.
(The software can surely work it out. However, if one can have the hardware also carry that load, the control core’s pressure would decrease and it could process other things…)
“Hello? Jin? Oii.”
Jin was deep in thought.
(Then, what can be in place of it? ….Automata and golems are made by copying the structure of human body. Something a human has but an automata does not…. sense of touch!)
Eyes for vision. Ears for hearing. Nose for sense of smell. All of these have a special magi device for it and were acting like a pseudo sense organ.
However, for sense of touch, they only have something very poor.
There’s a temperature sensor in the chest portion to detect heat and cold. It is used to monitor the metal body’s temperature.
If used properly, it could also detect the temperature of the object the fingertips touch.
Sense of pain isn’t being considered from the start.
(A while before, Reiko didn’t use her sword techniques even after learning them because figuring out the ‘ample’ amount of strength would be difficult.)
Complicated actions need delicate power distribution. Even though they have multiple times the processing speed of humans, it would be extremely difficult to calculate the strength allocation while moving tens or hundred times faster.
Even more so ‘cause Reiko’s power is tremendous. Between adjusting from 10 to 1 and from 10,000 to 1, the difference is huge.
One can easily figure out which will be harder to determine the strength for—simple actions like punching or kicking, or complicated actions like locking techniques in judo.
Such a conclusion had also come up after a discussion with Laojun.
(Ah…. So that’s how it is…)
How he would help Reiko understand power distribution even better—Jin had just thought up of a solution for it.
(I didn’t think about it enough…)
There was a need to control Reiko’s magical muscle to the milli—no, to the micron unit by delicately limiting the power output from ether converter and mana driver for Reiko’s power distribution. All this while moving more than ten times faster than a human.
Reiko probably couldn’t explain all that to Jin.
“……What happened to Jin?”
“He probably became aware of something important.”
A few minutes after Jin had indulged in thinking. Saki and Reinhart were whispering to each other.
“Kufufu, there were times when you became like that too, huh? A specialty idiot, eh?”
“I don’t want to be told that by you.”
And then, Jin returned to reality.
“Saki, thank you! Thanks to your words, I might be able to progress greatly!”
In response to Jin’s loud thanks, Saki replied, still confused.
“Kufufu, I don’t really get what you mean but it’s an honor to be of use. If it’s okay with you, could you explain it to us as well?”
“Yes, of course! Reinhart, I would also like to hear your opinion on this.”
Saying that, Jin started explaining the theory of power control which he had just thought of.
Jin instructed Reiko to boil all of the remaining sap until they turned to maple syrup.
And it seems Saki had also regained her senses.
“Hmm, I can’t have you be like this, Saki…”
Reinhart said with a worried face, concerned about his childhood friend.
“By the way, why did the servant go out?”
To Jin’s question, Saki scratched her head and answered with a strained smile,
“Well, you see, I haven’t paid rent for the last 3 months so…”
“That’s no good…”
Even Jin instinctively retorted to that.
“For now, let’s just get food from my house…”
Reinhart said, with a pensive expression.
“Not paying rent for 3 months, what happened? There are a lot of expensive materials here too…. don’t tell me..”
“Kufufu, yep. My father would always end up buying all the rare materials. Well, me too.”
In short, a researching idiot who has no sense of economy.
“Just get a butler to manage the house.”
Reinhart was exasperated. However, Saki just replied with a nonchalant expression,
“We are not nobles or anything. We don’t really need a butler.”
Saki’s reply worried Reinhart as she made it sound like it wasn’t her problem. Jin worked out a plan.
“Right, Reinhart. We could just make an automata.”
Reinhart was immediately hooked on the plan. He lives up to his reputation of being a building maniac.
“Ooh! We can do that! You will help as well, right, Jin?”
Reinhart’s excitement increased even further with Jin’s reply.
“Alright! Then let us make the 2nd best automata in the world!”
Seeing Reinhart so excited, Saki asked,
“…..Well, that’s fine but, what do you mean by 2nd best?”
“Mm? That’s simple. After all, the best automata in the world is Reiko-chan over there.”
Hearing that, Saki looked like she had just remembered about Reiko and gazed at Reiko with her glasses on.
“Her build looks amazing the more I look…. That reminds me but… Reinhart, and Jin. It’s fortunate that two of the top rate magi engineers are here.”
She bent over the table saying that.
“Mm? You have something you want to ask?”
There are many common points of interest shared by alchemists and magi engineers and they have been influencing one another to develop even more.
Reinhart had probably thought Saki had a small question or something when he asked that. He surely didn’t think that he wouldn’t be able to answer.
“Well then, I will go ahead and ask but… the golems and automatas, these magic dolls, how are they able to hold cups, which are very fragile, without breaking them?”
Golems and automatas’ general movement control is usually given to them by their masters. And the masters inherit it from their masters.
This movement control system can be explained by comparing it to an operating system. In other words, it is usually inherited by the magi engineers from their masters as a ‘black box’ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_box). There’s no progress there.
If you were to track it to its roots, most of the current control systems would lead to Adriana Barbora Cecy.
And the details of the control system, like magic, is stored in a ‘library’ in the ‘worlds with magic’. And most magi engineers are just accessing and copying that.
And, as for Jin,
“….Hmm, it’s really complicated so I will try to explain it simply. First, they scan the target. Then, they check it with their knowledge of things and if they find a match, they grip it with the necessary strength.”
Jin simplified it. Saki, and even Reinhart, was impressed.
Seeing Reinhart thinking about it with a backward glance, Saki asked more questions.
“Hmmm, very intriguing… Then, what if it’s not in the knowledge of things? They won’t know how strongly to grip it if it’s something they saw for the first time, right?”
“You come asking the hard questions, huh? ..Well, it’s the same till the checking part. And if it’s not there, they perform ‘analogy’. They search for things similar to it or things with similar material.”
“I see, I see.”
Saki nodded. To which Jin grinned and asked,
“It’s fine if they find something similar. But don’t you want to know what happens if they don’t?”
“Thought so…. They start the action of ‘gripping’. The fingers touch the target. Then they put in the strength…. You get it this far?”
“Yes, of course. The problem is after that. If they put in too much strength, it will break. If they don’t put in enough strength, they won’t be able to hold it. What do they do?”
