Chapter 28

The Samurai Mask Princess Kaguya

This is a story from Suzuna’s point of view.

Pow! Bang!

I suddenly heard the sound of lights popping and glass shattering. No, it was the fluorescent lights on the ceiling that shattered. The sound of a pistol firing was surprisingly light. While I was escaping from reality like that, I heard a shouting voice that made me confront reality.

“Everyone! Don’t Move!”

There were three men with their faces hidden behind masks. All of them were holding pistols in one hand. We are currently at the bank in front of the station closest to my high school. We are currently involved in a bank robbery.

On my way home from school, Yukari said she had to stop by the bank to make a payment for a doujinshi she had purchased through mail order (a healthy one, to be sure), so I followed her. Just as I was about to go to the teller’s window to complete the transaction, the normally dressed customer suddenly pulled out a mask and a gun from his bag and turned into a bank robber.

“What? Why? Why?”

I heard Yukari mumbling as she was freaking out, and I thought about calming her down.

“Why would a bank robber have a Walther P5?  They’re so expensive, even the German police don’t use many of them.”

I don’t think that was necessary. She’s too much of a gun geek to care. I was surprised that she could tell what kind of gun he was using just by looking at it from a distance.

But when she put it that way, I also got curious. I’ve read in mystery novels that Russian pistols like Tokarev are quite common, but I’m curious to see a bank robber with a rare pistol, even in the 23rd district.

So, I secretly cast an analysis spell. I am already at a level where I can use it without others noticing.

As a result, I found out that the pistol was made of brass and plastic except for the barrel. In other words, it was a modified pistol based on a model gun.

If that’s the case, I might as well take control of them, I thought. I’m not sure if it would have been possible six months ago, but for me now, three modified pistols are not something that can even scratch me. And I’m over 190 centimeters tall and a second dan in karate. In addition, my school is a well-established full-contact style that has been teaching actual combat karate for a long time. Even if I fight against them without using magic, I will win.

But, as expected, subduing three people with guns intact might look suspicious. I don’t know if I can push through with  just “I was lucky.”

On the other hand, I can’t use attack magic. Even something like paralysis is impossible. Unlike analysis magic or mind-reading magic, my body glows flamboyantly when I try to use them. I can’t use the invisibility I usually use when I use magic, not when I’m being watched as a hostage like this.

Just as I was thinking that, the situation got worse. There was another robber coming out from the back. I guess he was coming back from the bank safe. The worst part was the gun he had in his hand. It wasn’t a handgun, but a rifle, no, an automatic rifle, one of the major ones that even I know of.

“Oh my God, an Armalite M16?”

Yukari raised her voice in a strained tone. Yes, it’s a modified model gun based on Japanese manga. I’ve analyzed it, and the trouble is, it seems to be able to fire continuously.

This is no good. It’s too unrealistic to think that a mere high school girl could subdue a robber with a modified gun that can shoot repeatedly without getting hurt. Let’s just wait for the police to solve the problem. The Japanese police are so good that they should be able to do something about it as long as they take their time. I guess I can’t be so carefree anymore.

“What are we gonna do?”

“Looks like the media has arrived. Let’s kill one of them.”

“Isn’t it early yet? Why don’t you check out the news on Channel NO. 1?”

“We are in local news. No nationwide broadcast yet.”

“Wouldn’t it be better to kill one now, so the media will take notice?

“What if that speeds up the police raid? Our goal is not money. It’s about how conspicuous we can be and how many people we can kill.”

“Yeah, man, I’m ready for the death penalty anyway. It’s just a matter of how much publicity I can make and how much I can shake up those damned rear ends!”

I could hear the robbers talking. They’re not looking for money, they’re looking to cause a stir. They seem to be thinking of killing as many people as possible, even if it means they will be executed.

I don’t really like to use mind-reading magic, but I don’t know how serious they are. So, I secretly read their minds.

It was the worst. In the depths of their minds, these guys were raging with resentment towards the world for not recognizing them, and negative emotions such as jealousy of the popular people in the rear, only because they were not popular.

I can still understand jealousy, I’m human. I was also very jealous when I saw Marie and George’s date. But would you normally try to kill someone for that? And that too, indiscriminately!

I felt like throwing up at the sight of their dark passions, and struggled to hold it back. Yukari noticed this and asked me worriedly.

“Suzuna, are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I’m just feeling a little sick.”

Even as I said this, I was filled with the desire to throw up the bitterness in my mouth. These people are really rotten.

If you don’t get recognized, why don’t you try until you do?

You say you’re not popular, but have you ever made an effort to be popular?

How can you be so jealous that you want to kill someone?

The reason why I felt that way was because I remembered that person.

A person who has worked hard for four hundred years before gaining the power to be recognized.

A person who has the power to make the whole world bow down to him, but never thinks about getting a woman by force, and never neglects his efforts to be popular.

The kind of person who doesn’t envy popular people, but respects them for what they lack.

“After all, I am an idiot. If you have time to be jealous of others, it would be much more constructive to work hard in the meantime!”

“Jealous, huh? If they are popular, wouldn’t it be better to ask them for help rather than be jealous of them?”

I couldn’t help but chuckle as I replayed the things that he would say in my brain.

“You’re such an idiot.

When I mumbled in a quiet voice that no one could hear, the worst finally happened.

Pang!

“Aaah! Ouch!”

“Aaaaah! Aah!”

We were gathered in front of the counter as hostages, and the robbers opened fire on us. The man in front of me, who was in his early twenties, was hit in the leg by a bullet and was bleeding. The young woman sitting with him, who seemed to be his girlfriend, was screaming.

“You suck!”

“Shut up, next time I’ll hit right in the head!”

The robber, cursed by his friends, raised his gun again and aimed at the man’s head.

I have to stop this! But if I do that, my power will be exposed. I won’t be able to continue my current peaceful life. How can I throw that away?

“Then why don’t you come to me?”

“Huh? Huh?”

I couldn’t help but scream out loud at the voice that played itself back in my brain. What a selfish thing to say, that idiot!

But that’s what I’m really thinking, isn’t it?

I couldn’t help but giggle.

“Su… Suzuna?”

Oh, I’ve worried Yukari, haven’t I? No, it’s not just that. Because of the strange voice I raised earlier, the robbers stopped aiming at the man and looked at me.

That’s fine. Then I’m going to be as stupid as I can!

However, the only person here who knows my name and identity is Yukari. But just in case, let’s keep my true identity hidden, even if it’s just a formality.

I put on the face down mask and stand up and cast a healing spell on the man who was shot first. He was a bit far away, but at this distance, the healing magic would work. The power of the magic pushed the bullet out of the wound, and the wound began healing and the bleeding stopped.

After confirming this, I turned to the robber who had just shot the man and said while pointing my index finger at him.

“Stop it!”

“Who are you? What the hell are you doing?”

Ignoring the robber’s question, I started singing a song that I just came up with.

“One, I hide my secrets behind a mask.

Two, I use mysterious magic.

And three, I do evil for everyone’s happiness,

Princess Kaguya!”

“Huh? What?”

The robbers are stunned. No, Yukari and the rest of the hostages are also stunned. Of course they are. But I’m not so naive as to let that opportunity pass me by.

“Ha!”

I jumped over the hostages in front of me and kicked a robber in the face.

“Geez! Ew!”

The robber was knocked out by a single kick from me before he had time to point his gun at me. I didn’t even need to strengthen my body with magic power against him.

“You!!”

A nearby robber tried to point his gun at me, but it was already too late!

In the meantime, I ran towards him and hit him with a single elbow strike on his chest, and then hit the other guy next to him in the jaw with a palm strike to knock him out. This leaves only the one with the automatic weapon.

“I will kill you!”

Pararara!

The automatic rifle burst into flames. Five bullets flew towards me. Even though it was a modified gun, it used 22 caliber hunting rifle bullets. The supersonic trajectory of the bullets was aimed at me.

But my eyes, strengthened by magic, can see it even through the small peephole in my mask. My arms, strengthened by magic, can move faster than the bullets. And my palms, protected by defensive magic, can catch it!

 Flutter, Flutter

“Don’t think you can stop me with bullets.”

As I dropped the bullet I had caught in my hand to the floor, I said in a provocative and bold manner.

“What the hell are you? What are you?”

The last robber shouted, so I’m going to add to my lore.

“On behalf of the moon, I will defeat you! Samurai Mask Princess Kaguya!”

I was coming back from school, so I’m wearing my uniform. I don’t have a sword on me, but since I said it earlier, I’ll call myself “Samurai Mask Princess Kaguya”. And if the sailor uniform and the moon overlap, I’ll have no choice but to take down the decisive line. When I was in kindergarten, I watched the live-action version with my sister, and Keiko Kitagawa, who played Rei, is now a married woman.

“Don’t be ridiculous!”

Pat, pat!

While I was feeling a little emotional, the robber started shooting at me with the remaining bullets. But there was no way that two shots would do the trick if five shots in a row hadn’t worked.

I catched them in the same way, jumped straight up to the robber, and finally finished him off with a single high kick.

“Mission Complete!”

But just as I was about to say goodbye to my peaceful life I suddenly remembered his words that had slipped my mind until now.

“With mind manipulation magic, you can erase the memories of anyone who sees you use magic.”

I said ‘no’ to him when he said that, but if I do that then there would be no problem, right? There’s no time to waste now, right? Hahahahahaha.

Now what should I do?

After a lot of thought and falsifying the memories of those who were there, the next day at lunchtime at school, Yukari was giving a powerful speech about the previous day’s experience to her classmates.

“That was amazing, “Samurai Mask Princess Kaguya!” I can’t believe I got to see something like that with my own eyes, just like in the manga! I can’t believe I gotta see it!”

“It’s true.”

I agreed with her. I’m visiting the class next door with my lunch. I thought about it a lot, but there was no way to cover up the fact that someone had beaten the robbers, so I decided to pretend that the mysterious magical girl had broken in. I’m supposed to be sitting there with Yukari, shivering.

As for the video cameras that were set up on the premises, I made sure that all the ones that were at an angle that would show me in the picture were destroyed by the robbers and had holes drilled in them from gunshot wounds, and I replaced the recorded data with black screens. I did it with my magic. I also repaired as many fluorescent lights that had been destroyed by the warning shots as to match the number of cameras that had been destroyed, so that there would be no discrepancy between the number of bullets and the number of broken items. There were some media outside the bank, but the images they took of the premises from outside were not that clear, and our position was in a blind spot from the outside. Well, there were some details that didn’t add up, but at least I wouldn’t have to worry about the mysterious magical girl’s identity being revealed as me.

I was thinking, but Yukari’s next words shocked me.

“But I didn’t think there was some other girl as tall as Suzuna. I was so surprised.”

If I ever have to be “Princess Kaguya” again, I will have to make sure to decrease my height.
