Chapter 21 – Shopping with Mr. Ronil
Translator’s Note: I’m changing the name of the receptionist of the guild from Shirley to Charlie, as that feels closer to the pronunciation of the raw’s name (Shaarii).
I’m also gonna be adding “Ms.” And “Mr.” before the name of some people when Haku is talking to them, as she usually talks in polite speech, so it feels appropriate to use “Mr. Ronil” instead of just “Ronil.”
Lastly, there was a small mistake a few chapters ago, where it was said that Haku filled up a form when taking a request. Haku is illiterate, so Charlie was the one who filled the form for her. This has been fixed.
With this out of the way, onwards to the chapter.
———————
I had my measurements taken in the back room.
It’s a bit weird to say this about myself, but I really do have a small girl’s body, don’t I?
My body is slim and I basically have no breasts to speak of… Will they grow up in the future? I’m not sure if I can have many expectations for that.
Then, I was given some clothes to try on, and chose something that made me look like a traveler.
It felt nice to wear a cloak. It gave off a nice feeling.
Ms. Marie told me that she couldn’t give it to me just yet though, as she needed to make some adjustments to the clothing to make it suit me.
Because well, they were all too big for me.
I was also shown plenty more clothes to choose from, but as I had no fashion sense at all, I decided to leave everything up to Ms. Marie.
After all, in this life, I had never had much of a choice with my own clothing, and in my previous life, I had always worn a white coat… It’s hard to get a fashion sense like that.
With this done, we returned to the main portion of the store, where Mr. Ronil was waiting for me.
As soon as he saw us, he stood up and greeted us.
“Did you find anything you like, Haku?” Mr. Ronil asked me.
“Yes. Thanks to your and Ms. Marie’s help.” I replied.
“I’m glad to hear that.” He then turned towards Ms. Marie, “So, how much is it?”
“It would be 1 small gold coin and 7 silver coins, but since Haku is quite cute, I’ll give you a discount of 3 silver coins.” Ms. Marie answered.
“Alright, give me a second.” Mr. Ronil took out a small bag from his pocket, then picked up an appropriate number of coins from it and gave them to Ms. Marie.
“Eh? Uhn… I can pay for it myself…” I told him.
Mr. Ronil chuckled, “It’s fine, don’t worry about it.
“I feel bad that you’ve been dressed up like that until now, Haku, so let me help you get some nice clothes.” He then started stroking my head.
Him saying this kind of thing while acting like that made me lose my will to complain…
Just like Mr. Ryuk… The people I’ve met are really kind, aren’t they?
I made a vow in my heart, that if they got in any trouble, I would do my best to return the favor.
So, for now, I will take advantage of Mr. Ronil’s kindness.
Ms. Marie said that the clothes would be ready in two days, so we left the store after promising to pick it up at the appropriate date.
“So, do you have anything else you need to buy? I can show you around if you’d like.” Mr. Ronil asked me.
“Thank you, Mr. Ronil.
“But is that alright? Aren’t you busy?” I asked him.
He chuckled again, “It’s alright. I’m already done with my business here.
“In fact, it should be about time for me to leave, but the highway is currently blocked, so I’m stuck here for a while.”
“The highway?” I asked.
Mr. Ronil then explained to me that a large number of monsters seems to have appeared in the highway that leads to the next town.
Their numbers seems to have been gradually increasing since a few days ago, and they have been attacking travelers, so restrictions have been imposed to stop people from dying to those monsters.
It started a few days ago though? So… Roughly around the time I arrived at this town?
I didn’t know there was a highway that was getting in trouble though, since I always leave through the side gate that leads to the forest.
“I heard that the guild is currently preparing a subjugation team to get rid of the monsters. Have you heard anything about it, Haku?” Mr. Ronil asked me.
“No, nothing…” I replied honestly.
I had mostly been thinking about making potions, so I didn’t pay any attention to this kind of thing.
Maybe the request was posted on the bulletin board, but not only did I pay no heed to it, but I also wouldn’t be able to read it even if I had seen it.
Well, I guess I can ask about it tomorrow when I go to the guild.
“So, because of that, I have to stay in this town until the monsters are taken care of.” Mr. Ronil told me.
“I see… I hope the restrictions are lifted soon.” I replied.
“Well, I was worried about you, Haku, so I think it was a good thing that I had to stay for a while longer.
“Besides, it seems like the monsters aren’t particularly strong, so this problem should be solved soon.” Mr. Ronil told me.
Hold on, isn’t this a situation where he is clearly troubled by something?
Then… Isn’t this a chance for me to return the favor?
I was planning on going to the guild tomorrow, but I changed my mind. I’m going there as soon as I’m done shopping.
I don’t know if I can take on this request while still being an F-rank adventurer, but if I can, I should be able to help everyone out with my magic.
“By the way, it’s lunchtime right now, so shall we get something to eat?” Mr. Ronil suggested.
I looked up at the sky and saw that the sun was pretty high up… It was indeed a good time to eat lunch.
… Have I ever eaten lunch though? I feel like I haven’t.
Back in the village, it was normal to just eat once in the morning and once in the evening.
And in my previous life, I was used to skip lunch, so I didn’t feel troubled about that at all.
I would often forget to eat after I got immersed in something. It was an old bad habit of mine.
“Let’s.” I nodded.
“There’s a restaurant I like quite a bit. Let me take you to it.” Mr. Ronil told me.
Since I’ve now remembered about lunch, I think I should eat it.
So, me and Mr. Ronil left the commercial district.
The place that he brought me to felt similar to popular Japanese restaurants. *
It also had tables set outside the store, so we could eat out in the open if we wanted to.
Mr. Ronil seemed to be quite familiar with it, so he quickly ordered some food for us.
I wouldn’t be able to read it even if I looked at the menu, so it’s nice that he took the initiative for that.
… I wonder if I should try learning how to read.
While I pondered about it, Mr. Ronil told me what he ordered and how much it costed. That was much appreciated.
Food here was more expensive than at the inn I was staying at, but it didn’t feel like an unreasonable price.
Mr. Ronil seemed to be planning on treating me again, but I took the initiative to pay for my part this time. I can’t afford to rely on his kindness over and over again.
In any case, after a while, a roasted beef-like dish, with plenty of sauce, was served to us.
It was very soft, and moist meat juices overflowed as soon as I put my knife on it.
And when I put it in my mouth, as I started chewing on it, the flavor quickly permeated all my taste buds, filling me with pure happiness.
This must be the most delicious meal I have ever tasted, so I started eating it quite enthusiastically.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ronil stared at me eat with a smile on his face.
Perhaps I was showing a bit too much happiness, but it couldn’t be helped. This meal was just way too tasty.
“I’m glad that you like it.” Mr. Ronil commented.
“It’s incredibly delicious. Thank you very much.” I replied.
I finished eating it in no time and rubbed my stomach with pure satisfaction.
If eating lunch means I can eat something this tasty, then I guess it might be nice to eat lunch every once in a while.
Then, while we were relaxing for a bit during our post-lunch break, Mr. Ronil spoke to me, “So, Haku, what are you going to do after this?”
“I was… Oh, right. I was planning on buying a bag.” I told him.
Preferably one that I can put over my shoulder. I want to use it as camouflage for the Storage skill.
It would be nice to be able to act proud about the skill that I can use, but I would prefer to not receive party invites like I received the other day, if possible.
“A bag? Then we should go to a tools store.” Mr. Ronil told me.
“Do you know of any?” I asked him.
“Of course. I’m a merchant, after all.” He replied.
I think it’s quite amazing that he knows all the stores that sell the things one might need.
Though well, supermarkets don’t exist here, differently from how it was in my previous life, so I guess a merchant needs to learn a lot about what each local store sells.
And since Mr. Ronil seems to currently have quite a bit of free time, he seems to be willing to show me around.
“So, shall we go?” He suggested.
“Yes, please.” I nodded.
Mr. Ronil then guided me to the store.
For the bag, I bought two pouches that I could wear around my waist, as they would let me keep my hands free as I moved, and they wouldn’t fall off even if I moved violently.
It might be a good idea to put potions in these pouches.
Also, I had been planning on buying some small bottles for my potions, but I had an idea just now, so I decided to look around and buy actual potions instead of just bottles.
It was a bit more expensive to buy the potions at an apothecary’s store than it was to buy them at the guild’s tavern though.
Also, the effects of the potions seemed to be a bit inconsistent… Are they all handmade perchance?
On the other hand, the potions sold at the guild seemed to all have the same effectiveness… Is it because of a difference in the crafting method perchance?
It’s hard to know for sure…
In any case, I thought the apothecary might also be willing to buy my potions, so I decided to show them one of my homemade ones.
The store’s owner was quite surprised to see that.
They explained to me that most potions are made in large facilities that mass-produce them.
People like me, who can make their own potions from scratch, are incredibly rare it seems.
Moreover, the method to craft potions is kept secret, so it’s quite hard for one to learn on their own.
Also, it’s apparently normal for one to need to train for many years to learn how to discern a good potion from a bad one.
Due to that, the store owner was quite surprised to see a child as young as me make potions on my own, and they suggested that I should become an apothecary as soon as possible.
I declined their offer though.
Maybe after I can make high-level potions, I might consider it.
However, when I said that, I was told that only a handful of people can make high-level potions.
They apparently need very expensive materials, a very specific method, highly advanced tools, and hard-to-use reagents.
In other words, it was something that couldn’t be easily imitated by just about anyone.
That was a bit disappointing… I thought I would be able to make a lot of money if I was able to create high-level potions.
Well, I’m curious about how a potion-making facility works, but I think I can remain as a carefree adventurer for the time being.
There are still many things that I have to learn, after all.
In any case, Mr. Ronil said he would gladly buy my potions, so I decided to sell them to him.
And as a thank you for everything he has done for me so far, I decided to actually sell him all the potions that I still had with me.

* Translator’s Note: The actual word used to describe the restaurant is an “izakaya.” I don’t have a good way of describing it, so if you’re curious about it, I suggest googling for it. It’s not hard to find images of what an izakaya looks like.
