High School Girl Warrior

Chapter 110 – Let’s go with a loud bang

(Inugami Renji’s PoV)

I talked to Ms. Mitsune while walking through the mostly deserted underground path.

[So, what’s your favorite food? I’m quite fond of salmon bowls myself.] She told me.

“Mine is… Ramen, I guess. Especially the ones filled with bean sprouts.

“… Favorite color?” I asked her.

[White!] She exclaimed.

“Mine is black.” I replied.

[What next…? Mmmm… Favorite animal? I’m more of a cat person myself.] She told me.

“For real? We don’t match at all, do we? Mine is dog.” I said.

We were working hard to create conversation topics for us to talk about, which right now meant we were asking questions to one another about things that we liked.

This was Mitsune’s suggestion, since she seems to really love talking.

“Uhn… Favorite movie or something?” I asked.

[A movie…? Can it be an anime movie?] She asked back.

“Sure.” I nodded.

[Then, that old children’s anime that has a boy that shows his butt.] She told me.

“Oh, I see… Which of the movies, by the way?” I asked next.

[The robot one, of course! It’s the best! I even cried while watching it!] She exclaimed.

“Is it a recent movie perchance? I haven’t watched that one.” I replied.

[Goodness, you have wasted your life… What about you though? Favorite movie?] She asked me.

“If we’re talking about movies based on that children’s anime… I think the one about an adult organization striking back was interesting.” I told her.

[That’s a good one too.] She said.

And as we were talking like that…

[Hold on.] She suddenly told me.

I reflexively braced myself and put my hand on Shikanda.

“A zombie…?” I asked in a low voice.

[I don’t think so… Seems to be a human, actually!

[But he seems to have just fallen down.] She replied.

Seems like it’s time to get to work then.

I quickly moved forward and, before long, came across an old man lying down.

He seemed to be quite dirty, and his hair seemed to be covered with ashes.

“Hey…” I called out to him.

“U-ugh…” He groaned.

He seemed to have a small injury on his leg, but it didn’t seem to be from a zombie’s bite, so his life was probably not at risk.

“Water…” He said.

Seems like that’s what he needs the most right now?

So, I put down my backpack, took out a yet-to-be-opened plastic water bottle, and held it out to the old man.

He carefully took the water that was handed to him, then slowly brought it to his mouth, making sure to not let even a single drop fall out.

I guess I just earned one point of ‘helping people out’ for Ms. Mitsune.

“Are you alright?” I asked him once he finished drinking.

“Uh-uhn…” The old man looked at me with a strange expression, “You… Look weird.”

Well, I guess that’s a reasonable statement. I am wearing a strange helmet, a shiny silver armor, and a fiery red cloak, after all. I basically look like someone in cosplay.

“Thank you though. It was a big help. This was the best water that I have ever drunk.” The old man told me.

“You don’t need to exaggerate it like that.” I sat down in front of him with a wry smile.

This old man looked like a homeless person.

I mean, that’s not particularly uncommon these days, but this old man was probably homeless since even before the zombie outbreak.

Otherwise, his clothes wouldn’t be this worn.

“Were you going somewhere?” I asked him.

“Ah… I heard that there was a fairly large community in the Akasaka-Mitsuke station just down the road.

“I was thinking of asking if I could join them, but… From what I saw, there were way too many zombies clinging to their barricades, so that was impossible.” He told me.

“If they have a barricade, wouldn’t it be possible for them to safely deal with the zombies from inside it?” I asked him.

“That’s what I thought at first, so I just looked at it from afar and waited, but… Unfortunately, I ran out of food.” He replied.

“In other words, they haven’t been able to do much even after a good amount of time passed, right?” I asked him.

The old man nodded with a hardened expression.

[It’s good to hear that there are people in trouble nearby.] Ms. Mitsune said.

I decided to ignore her unscrupulous statement.

“Then, I guess I have to hurry on ahead.” I told the old man.

“What? The zombies are still there…” The old man commented.

“Exactly. It’s a chance for me to show off.” I said the craziest words I have ever said so far.

But well, while I was half-joking, I was also half-serious there.

“Follow me once you’re feeling better. I’ll go ahead and kill the zombies.” I told the old man.

***

Unsurprisingly, I couldn’t do any more time-wasting idle chatter with Ms. Mitsune from this point onwards.

Instead, we walked down the dark subway tracks in silence.

Before long, I saw a single lone zombie ahead of me, so without stopping, I put my hand on Shikanda and it quickly beheaded the zombie once I got close enough to it.

[Seems like there are zombies here indeed, just like the old man said.] Ms. Mitsune commented.

“Yeah.” I replied.

[Anyways, good job! You seem to be getting used to handling the zombies.] Ms. Mitsune told me.

I was about to reply to her compliment, but…

“S-s-s-someone help! If there’s anyone hearing, please help!” I heard a scream.

I immediately started running at full speed once I heard that.

And when I approached the station, I realized that the situation seemed to be rather hopeless.

Zombies are quite dumb and have a hard time climbing stairs.

So, the people from the Akasaka-Mitsuke station seemed to have taken advantage of that and created a barricade made of jumbled wood and other leftover materials on the station’s stairs, preventing the zombies from climbing onto the platform.

However, it seemed like those barricades were about to be destroyed by the zombie horde.

No matter how I looked at it, this was definitely a desperate situation.

“And yet, here we are…” I muttered.

My expression became bitter.

I thought I would be able to get inside the barricade and gradually get rid of the zombies from there, but… In this current situation, that’s just not possible. I would have to fight dozens of zombies head-on if I were to help those people.

“What do we do?” I asked Ms. Mitsune.

[Let’s go all out with a loud bang!] She replied.

Is she serious…?

[Shikanda seems to be itching to go on a rampage, you know?] She told me.

Well… That much is true. The sword was sheathed right now, but I could feel it shake even without touching its handle.

At this rhythm, it might even jump out of its scabbard on its own and fly towards the zombies.

“… Answer me honestly. Do you really think we can win against this many zombies?” I asked her.

[I’ve told you that many times! Of course!] She happily replied.

I sighed.

… Should I really trust the opinion of someone who cries while watching children’s anime?

Well… I guess it’s fine. It’s not like I have many options available to me right now anyways.

So, I smoothly unsheathed Shikanda.

In this dark place, the silver sword shone brightly.

“Let’s go then. ‘Life-saving’ operation… Start!” I said more to myself than to Ms. Mitsune.
