Chapter 1

Kampfer – Volume 3, Chapter

1,

Part 9.

I prepare some paper. A4 size is fine. If it’s smaller, it might be a little difficult to write on. If it’s  large, it won’t fit on the desk. You can also put it on the floor, but on tatami mats the letters get distorted,  and on a wooden floor your body gets cold. So A4 is ideal, but basically, anything is fine as long as it’s easy  to write on.

A black pen. With a dark color, you feel energized. Write “Senou Natsuru” in the center with this.  This is my name. Oh, I forgot to mention, I’d prefer the paper to be a flyer or a torn-out  calendar page. For recycling reasons, it’s not good to write on a blank sheet of paper. In fact, I use  wrapping paper from a department store.

Now next to it, I write “Sakura Kaede.” Don’t you think it’s a good name? She’s the person I admire. After  a dreamy moment, I draw an arrow toward Sakura-san from my side.

Arrows represent human relationships. It means I like Sakura-san. I’m embarrassed to write  “like” directly, but with an arrow, it’s not so bad.

So, Sakura-san draws an arrow too. However, it points away from me. And she also writes  “Senou Natsuru” at the end.

This way, with Sakura-san in the center, my names will be on either side. But that alone won’t be  clear. Not even I understand it. So, under the first name I wrote, I’ll add “(Male)”

in parentheses. And under the last name, also “(Female).”

That is, Natsuru the male and Natsuru the female are shown. People who don’t know the situation will be  confused, but let’s move on. The explanation will come later.

Next. Somewhere far away, I write “Sangou Shizuku.” I don’t draw an arrow, and under the name,  I even write “Demon.” It’s not that demons have a specific gender. It’s just to show their  personalities. Then, I also write “Mishima Akane.” She’s just the way she is.

Then I simply write “Kondou Mikoto” and “Nishino Masumi” in the same way. Maybe I’ll also  note down girls from other classes. This should be enough.

Now the main part begins. First, Sakura-san. She extends an arrow toward me, the man. Then,

next to the arrow, she writes “rival.” It’s sad not to be reciprocated, but I can’t help but look the other way  in the face of reality. Then, girls from other classes extend arrows toward me, the woman. They don’t write anyto

say

,It implies that they like me.

Mikoto shoots an arrow at me, the woman. She adds a question mark next to it. Then she does the same with  Masumi and writes “curiosity” next to it. Then, from my male perspective, I shoot another arrow toward Shizukuand write “enmity.”

And here comes the final one. From my female perspective, I shoot an arrow through Sakura-san and back  to me, a man. I don’t write anything next to it. It seems to imply that she likes me.

That’s all. Once you’re finished, I recommend you step back and look at it closely. It’s a  pretty bad relationship diagram. The only thing left to do is easy. Please throw it away. I’ll do it at home. For  now, I can’t throw it away, so I’ve rolled it up and put it in my bag.

—Uuaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh…

I put my hands to my head and groaned. I felt like the injustice of the world was presenting an  over-transfer notification to my body.

What kind of human relationship is this? It’s so complicated I feel like my head is about to explode.  I like a quiet life; my future dream is to marry Sakura-san and live in a detached house in the  suburbs or a 3LDK apartment. Of course, my occupation would be civil servant. Long live stability!  That’s why this isn’t the time to lose my way and stray in a place like this. It’s said that those who  lead a reckless youth in high school have a high probability of failing in the future.

I took that statistic to heart.

I winced in pain and fell out of the chair. Surrounded by such a great feeling of despair, I realized  I had ended up on the floor without noticing.

“Senou.”

The voice came from somewhere.

“Are you unwell? Are you sick?”

It was the teacher. I snapped back to my senses. That’s right. I’m at Seitetsu Academy, in class 2-4. Moreover,we’re in the middle of a class session right now.

“Sorry, I had a little attack.”

Kampfer – Volume 3

11

I answered casually and sat down. The professor simply said, “I see.”

My classmates seemed worried about me, as if wondering if I’d gone mad. Well,

in a way, they were right.

At a nearby table, Higashida asked me quietly,

“What are you doing? Are you crazy?

” “…I wish I were crazy,” I said. ”

You don’t understand, but right now I’m in an unfortunate situation, like a bad loan.  It would be so easy if I could just go crazy.

” “Unfortunate…it’s not a big deal, is it?”

“It’s not just that. When you’re really screwed, you’re not even allowed to lose your mind.  ” “Is that so?

” “Yes, that’s right.”

I slumped onto the table. There’s a reason for this. Well, I’d like you to listen for a bit.  Today the weather is overcast, further worsening my already gloomy mood. Though if I’d had a  bit of sunshine, it might have cheered me up a little, but it’s not that simple. Lately, my headaches  have been increasing exponentially, so if something good doesn’t happen soon, I feel like

throwing myself into the sea.

As you know, at Seitetsu Academy, which I attend, there’s a boys’ section and a girls’ section.  Being male, I’m part of the boys’ section. Although it’s tedious having to

constantly clarify this, I want to emphasize that, even though I’m called a Kämpfer, I’m originally a man.  To explain to someone who doesn’t know, being a Kämpfer is the root of my current problems. One day, I was assigned this role. Apparently, they are expected to be exclusively female and exist solely for fighting. Therefor, as a man, I was forced into a female body. The reason I am a woman is

simply “because that’s the way it is.”

Kampfer – Volume 3

12

Of course, I was both lamented and shocked. If there were some kind of super-positive individual who could acthis situation immediately, I would want to be their apprentice. Then I ended up fighting various enemies,  some friends joined me, and that’s how we got here.

Leaving the details aside, once this happens, it seems there’s no going back. It sounds great to live as  a Kämpfer and die as a Kämpfer, but in reality, it’s not very productive.

A man’s body and a woman’s body can, in principle, transform themselves at will.

So I, in female form, am also a member of the female section. My name is Natsuru Senou, and  I’m supposed to have returned from my gap year. This whole thing was quite complicated, but I’ll leave it at thaSo, I need to show up in the girls’ section too, but that day I’d decided to go to the

boys’ section.

First of all, to try and sort out these complicated and confusing human relationships, I’d decided  to follow the rule: “Mostly in the boys’ section. Sometimes in the girls’ section.” Otherwise, my  identity would completely crumble.

So I went to my class, 2-4, and right after a yawn as a greeting, one of my classmates  suddenly said to me, “Starting this week, we’re beginning preparations for the cultural festival!”

“Cultural festival?” I asked Higashida.

“Yes,” replied the boy with the biggest obsession with pretty girls in the boys’ section, while checking his  camera. This boy is the president of Seitetsu Academy’s secret, unauthorized club, the  Beauty Research Club, and boasts that “if it’s information about girls in the girls’ section, he  knows everything.” His full name is Mikihito Higashida.

“Is it that time of year already?”

“It came a little early this year. It’s always right after this, then comes the final exam. They said they didn’t haveto study.

” “Who wants to study? You’re a serious guy from where?”

“It’s the girls’ section,”

Higashida said without taking his eyes off the camera screen. Our school originally attracted intelligent student,

which had a high standard. The boys’ section wasn’t

far

behind either, but it seems that in class 2-4, no matter what they do, their performance is always the  worst compared to the other classes.

“Have we decided what to do yet?”

Higashida answered my question as he turned off his camera.

“It hasn’t been decided yet. I just heard it myself.

” “It doesn’t matter. No guests are coming anyway.

” “Same as last year.

” “The girls’ section will definitely take over,”

I stated. The Seitetsu Academy Cultural Festival had been held separately for boys and  girls until now. The boys in autumn. The girls in early summer. But because it was considered  inefficient, it was decided that both boys’ and girls’ festivals would be held on the same day in early summer.  The one who suppressed the alumni who opposed the unified event for fear that the tradition would  collapse was Shizuku Sangou, the student council president. Thanks to her skill, the ”  Seitetsu Festival” began to be held more spectacularly.

However, the unified event brought with it unexpected negative consequences. Visitors flocked  to the girls’ section, leaving the boys’ section practically empty. Thus, although they were the same  school, the result was a marked imbalance, with one part very lively and the other less so. It is said that  this was one of Shizuku’s few missteps, since she actually wanted to implement a completely  mixed plan, merging all the boys’ and girls’ classes. However, due to strong resistance, she was only able  to coordinate the dates.

By the way, that day we went en masse to the girls’ section and helped attract visitors. Since we had  nothing to show that day, we put up “Break Room” signs in the classrooms and left them empty. Although the  cultural festival was established at the beginning of summer to unite the classes that often slack off, our  failure was certainly noteworthy.

“What does the Beauty Research Club do?

” “It’s unofficial, so it can’t be exhibited. Although there is material. Natsuru, since you’re also the  advisor, cooperate.

” Kampfer – Volume 3

14 ”

I don’t want to. You’re suddenly involving me as an advisor!”

“Does my cooperation involve taking pictures of the girls’ section or something?”

“You guessed right.” Natsuru’s face must have been quite broad.

This guy thinks I’m very connected to the girls’ section. He seems convinced because Akane  has been visiting me and passing me pictures of girls. It’s not that I have much knowledge of the  girls’ section, but I’m just going in and out for other people’s needs, not because I have many  connections.

The teacher entered, interrupting Higashida and my conversation. Like Higashida, the teacher

spoke about the cultural festival. Starting this week, we’ll begin the preparation period.  After-school work will be allowed upon request. But that doesn’t mean neglecting your studies. And so  on.

The class listened in silence. Or rather, they weren’t interested. A characteristic of this class is that half  are uninterested during the allotted time, and the other half are either sleeping or lost in their own world  .

I didn’t fit into either group. I was mentally mapping out the relationships between the characters.  I was simply embarking on a team trip with sadness, the worst situation of all.

The teacher spoke while glancing at the attendance sheet.

“…So, for the preparations, Senou will be in charge.”

“Huh?”

Just after I sat down, reality hit me, and naturally, I screamed. The teacher said it as if it were the  most normal thing in the world.

“Senou is the class representative for the cultural festival.

” What?!

My mouth fell open in surprise. I thought it was absurd to be called up without warning  , but the others didn’t make a sound. Higashida hit me on the back.

“This is serious.”

Kampfer – Volume 3

15

There’s no escape. It’s no consolation. I tried to argue.

“Really? Why do I have to play this role? When was this decided?”

“Yesterday. It was unanimous.

” “No way!

” “That’s right. I said so before class. I’m sure you didn’t hear.

It’s true I was busy with human relations and didn’t listen. I skipped classes yesterday. I was in the

girls’ section, but I was at school. Deciding to ignore me like this… There’s no going back. My status as a  Kämpfer is a complete secret. Saying, ‘I can become a woman,’ would only make me look crazy. So I keep  walking between the boys’ and girls’ sections, which has led to me being considered a truant. However  , imposing tasks on others so easily… This group really isn’t worth it. Isn’t

democracy supposed to require a proper process?

” “Aren’t there any other representatives?

” “No. Just you.

” “And the class president?” ”

She shouted that she would commit seppuku if any more responsibilities were imposed on her. Accept it.”  Even the president, who was the only one who was serious, finally started to resist. She used to handle all the  tedious and boring tasks, but her worn-out appearance was now clearly visible.

There was no point in complaining to Higashida. The teacher continued to inform me about pending matters.  “There’s a meeting of the cultural festival executive committee members, so go.

” “When is it?

” “After school today.

” Wow! Today again. And after school, no less. My plan to go straight home and play until nightfall has been  ruined. Goodbye, Final Fantasy. I’ll level up another time.

Suddenly, a question occurred to me. “Sensei,

do

the meetings also include the girls’ section?”

“Yes, they go together. They’ll use the conference room above the library.”

Although

that question was cleared up, another uneasy feeling began to grow like a summer storm cloud.  If the girls’ section is included, there are most likely class representatives there as well. Even in  my class, 2-4, where I am. Last time I went yesterday, the class representative wasn’t even mentioned, nor waof the cultural fair. But maybe this is something…

I stood up from my seat, raising my hand like an elementary school kid.

“Sensei, my stomach hurts, I’m going to the nurse’s office.”

“Senou, you were fine a moment ago…”

“My stomach hurts!”

Perhaps because of the intensity of my words, the teacher nodded.

Leaving the classroom, I started running as if I weren’t a patient with a stomach ache. The storm cloud

The light that was beginning to form enveloped my mind and even my brain. I hope it’s just my imagination, butI have a bad feeling nonetheless.

I ran down the stairs and left the men’s section building. I passed the wing with the

infirmary and headed toward the library.

In a place where no one could see, I focused my power into my right arm.

The bracelet on my wrist began to glow a bluish-white. This is the sign of transformation  in Kämpfer. Soon, my entire body was enveloped in light.

I transformed into a woman’s body. Fortunately, my clothes also changed to the

women’s section uniform. Only the uniform changes when transforming into women’s clothing, so you have to casual clothes, but that doesn’t matter now.

I entered the library. I went through the lobby on the ground floor and arrived at the turnstile.  This turnstile is located on the dividing line between the men’s and women’s sections and is practically the  only point of entry. Seitetsu Academy separates men and women, so this is the only place  where you can move from one side to the other within the institution.

Kampfer – Volume 3

17

A mechanical arm, like those in parking garages, blocked the way at the turnstile. Only those with  permission can pass through.

I held my chip-enabled permission card up to the electronic reader. Being contactless, the electronic beep sou

quickly, and the gate opened.

Running again. I entered the sprawling women’s section from the men’s.

Perhaps because I was running without taking my eyes off the ground, my skirt was flapping conspicuously. Frdown, it felt strangely cool. Along the way, I was stopped by a teacher who told me, “Stop running,”  but it won’t be that easy.

I ran toward the second floor of the second-year section. I opened the door to classroom number four.  The students and the teacher in charge turned toward me simultaneously.

Their faces, in unison, expressed, “Oooh, you’ve finally arrived?” It wasn’t disdain for being late;  they seemed to be mocking me.

“…I was late.”

I spoke softly, trying to say as little as possible. My body is female, but my voice is male, so  I have to be careful not to be discovered.

“Ah, Natsuru-chan,”

the teacher said.

“This is settled.”

With chalk, she pointed to the words: “Class Representative for the Cultural Festival – Natsuru Senou.”  “Aaaaahh…”

My premonitions were confirmed, and I collapsed in the classroom doorway. I knew this would happen. It’s justthe boys’ section. They’re assigning everything to someone who isn’t even there.

As a feeling of despair washed over me, the girls in the class applauded.

“Congratulations!”

“Let’s hope this makes Senou-san even more unlucky. ”

Kampfer – Volume 3

18

“If you want to change your fate, please buy a special amulet.”

They all seem to be enjoying themselves quite a bit. They can pass their problems on to others, and they  especially like that it’s me, it seems.

The girls in class 2-4, completely disregarding the feelings of others, particularly those who  seem to have gendered their dreams, were three: “President,” “Vice President,” and “Treasurer.” At  least, I protested.

“Why me…? Why don’t you listen to my opinion…?”

“Because you weren’t here, Senou-san,”

said the president.

“So you couldn’t have waited until I arrived…?”

“We wouldn’t. Instead of someone who isn’t here, I took on the role. I nominated you in the first place to get  Senou-san’s opinion.

” “It’s not my opinion…!”

“It’s a legitimate action according to the proxy system.

Apparently, in this class, there’s a ‘proxy system’ where you act in place of

absent students, and you’re simply exercising that. What the heck is this?

” “Proxies are for baseball player contracts or something, not something others do for you…!  ” “Yes. Apparently, lawyers are sometimes appointed as well.

” “I’m not a baseball player…!”

“I’m not a lawyer either.

” The president seemed to want to say, “So what?”

Naturally, the entire class group ignored my protest. The teacher said, “Natsuru-chan, do it right or  you’ll repeat the year,” even going so far as to threaten.

Still, I couldn’t resist. After all, I’m also a member of the boys’ committee. It’s impossible to  juggle.

Kampfer – Volume 3

Kampfer – Volume 3

20

“The president will take care of this too, won’t she…?”

“I won’t.”

The president stated firmly.

“You won’t… being the president.

” “It’s because I don’t want to. I don’t have the Japanese sensitivity to avoid mentioning unpleasant things.  It has nothing to do with sensitivity.” Despite her distinguished appearance and air of a good student, how  twisted is her resolve?

Looking for help, I glanced at the vice president, who laughed uproariously, clutching her stomach. She’s no goShe’s the type to treat other people’s misfortunes like they’re a snack.

“Treasurer…”

I placed my last hope on her, but received the expected words.

“I won’t help you.

” “…Just as I thought.

” “If you pay me, I’ll accept the money. But I won’t help you.”

Expressionless and saying nothing useful. Who will pay?

Saying anything was pointless. From the teacher’s perspective, trying to assign responsibility is futile.  I was even ambushed in the boys’ section, but here I am keeping my composure. Women  have worse tempers than men, don’t they?

“At least…”

Suppressing my inner sighs, I said.

“At least an assistant…”

The president and vice president exchanged glances. They were surely weighing the pros  and cons. The treasurer immediately pulled out her calculator. Was it about money?

“That’s not bad.”

Kampfer – Volume 3

21

As I stifled a yawn, the teacher in charge spoke.

“How about we delegate it to someone who’s free? Ah…”

She flicked her finger on the attendance list.

“Mishima.

” “Y-Yes,”

Akane replied nervously.

“Help Senou. He’s inexperienced.

” “Y-…

” “You’re close, aren’t you?

” “Yes…

” “Then do it.

” “I understand… ”

Akane nodded.

Should I be happy? It’s comforting not to be alone mentally. Besides, it’s Akane who’s there. However  , I feel as though this matter might concentrate problems. If there’s any incident, both Akane and  I could get involved.

Feeling relieved, in fact, I smiled at Akane. But then, she turned away in surprise. What was that  reaction?

The president and the others were murmuring, “What does it matter?” “It’s solvable.” “Money.” No, I don’t like it“After class, there will be an executive committee meeting. Both of you must attend,”  the teacher said.

“Don’t skip class without permission.”

I know I shouldn’t, but what am I supposed to do? As a man, I’m also part of the committee.

It’s not like my body can be split in two, so we both have to be in the same place.

Kampfer – Volume 3

22

Of course, it seems I have no choice but to rely on Akane when it comes to the girls, but would it affect  my grades if I skip? Sorry. It’s not my fault.

Ignoring my inner turmoil, the teacher continued with the class.

In the end, I was forced to take the class in the girls’ section this way. Even though the nurse’s office was  saying a guy like me was sleeping, the boys in the boys’ section certainly wouldn’t even  bother to check. Those guys just walked around, their laziness evident. They didn’t bother with  complicated things.

During lunch break, I called Akane over.

“Akane, can I tell you something?

” “Yes…”

She spoke in a cautious tone. It’s not that she distrusts me, it’s just her personality. She’s the type  you’d be suspicious of if she spoke mysteriously. I don’t understand how this introverted girl can  become so brazen.

“What’s wrong…?”

“It’s dangerous to talk in the classroom. Let’s go somewhere else.

The class president and the others would probably come snooping around and ask what we were planning.  They might even try to plant listening devices.

” “Let’s talk in the cafeteria.

” “Huh…?”

Although she seemed surprised, she silently followed me.

The girls’ dining hall was clean and spacious, with plenty of chairs and tables. Not like the boys’, which, despitebeing new, was dark and damp like a medieval dungeon. Why was the new one more

neglected?

Since there were many tables for two, I thought it would be perfect for a private conversation, but  I was wrong.

As soon as we entered, I was surrounded by a bunch of girls.

Kampfer – Volume 3

23

—Kyaah, Onee-sama, Onee-sama!

—Is it true that you’ve become the class representative for the cultural festival?

—I’m definitely going to see Senou-sama’s class!

The girls approaching me were saying similar things, and I was shocked.

—W-Wait a… moment…

I was so overwhelmed by all the commotion that I couldn’t even breathe properly.

—Why… are you talking about it?

—Everyone already knows!

—Since Onee-sama is the representative, the cultural festival will be a success!

—I’ll follow you everywhere. So let me touch your breasts!

Wait, what was that all about?

Dodging the hand that was trying to grab my breast, I found out that my appointment as  class representative for the cultural festival had been extended during the first break. Apparently, the “Senou O” had published a special bulletin, so from what I’ve heard, there’s no girl who doesn’t know about it. By the  way, this “Senou Observers Club” is one of the underground club activities that gathers any information related to me, a boy, and plans to organize a database so it can

be searched on the web.

Akane was muttering, “That’s why I wanted to tell you…” Certainly, this isn’t a secret conversation at  all.

I signaled Akane with my eyes.

(Akane-chan, not here)

(Eh, what do you mean…?)

(Let’s go to the roof)

(No… please, stop…)

(Huh?)

Kampfer – Volume 3

24

(It’s horrible… it’s disgusting… that Natsuru-san would do something like that…)

She was completely flushed. It seems there has been some incredibly misinterpreted communication  . A conversation through glances is simply a fictional event, in any case.

“To the roof, to the roof.”

Since there’s no other option, I have to say it out loud. Finally, Akane nodded.

Pushing through the girls who were gathering, we headed for the roof.

The building with the dining hall has an open roof. On sunny days, it was a place for the girls to relax.  Although the boys can also use the rooftop, there’s a boastful idiot who plays the saxophone, and he’s a nuisait’s closed three days a week.

Luckily, there was hardly anyone on the roof. I confirmed that no one was following us, and we sat down in a c”What’s up…?”

Akane asked me, so I said, “I’ve also been appointed representative for the cultural festival in the  boys’ section.”

“So, if I keep this up, I’ll need two bodies. Sorry, but could you do the work in the

girls’ section?

” “Natsuru-san…” ”

I’m going to the meeting dressed as a man.

In the end, it’s just sad that I have to attend. It seems that in this world, it’s not so easy to escape anymore.”

“Akane-chan, just keep quiet until the meeting is over. I’ll do the same.

” “But what about the others in the class…?”

“They’re not going to do any planning anyway.

I don’t know how it will be in the girls’ section, but in the boys’ section, that’s for sure.  ” “Won’t anyone be excited…?

” “There’s no one, right?”

Kampfer – Volume 3

25

—The executive committee members would be in trouble if that were the case.

Suddenly, startled, I turned around.

There was Shizuku, the student council president. Standing backlit, she gazed down at us  seated with breathtaking beauty.

In a situation like: “Meeting for masochistic men to be scolded by Shizuku Sangou,”  I would have been delighted, but unfortunately my mistrust always got the better of me. We had a “It’s a complex relationship, her and me.

” “What’s wrong?”

I asked cautiously. ”

I overheard something and came to warn you. It’s a problem that you’re not enthusiastic about participating in tcultural festival, you know?

” “You have the right not to. Isn’t it one of the student council’s goals to encourage student autonomy  ?

” “Unity is important at the event. It’s also necessary to make a good impression on the school side  in these kinds of situations.

” “That’s a big concern. Why are you saying something like that?”

“Because I’m the student council president.

Of course, that’s true, but I always feel that Shizuku’s words have some ulterior motive.

This girl is an apparently exceptional beauty, as well as being an outstanding student, embodying  a kind of superhuman, Nietzschean way of thinking. She’s a super-student respected by both  the school and the students. But we knew she was a Kämpfer, and furthermore, we knew she  was on the opposite side.

” “Cultural festivals, even if they aren’t prepared, tend to get lively once they start.”  “It’s fun staying up all night preparing. It contributes to the class’s sense of unity.  ” “Who do you think you are, saying something like that about the other students?  The person themselves is surely not enjoying it. Definitely.

” Kampfer – Volume 3

26

“Anyway, do I really have to participate?

” “It was decided by the class, wasn’t it?

” “Wasn’t it your doing?

” “That’s impossible.”

She said it expressionlessly. When this girl says it, it doesn’t seem impossible at all.  “Anyway, make sure you attend the meeting.

” “I didn’t say I wouldn’t attend.”

“Then make sure you actively contribute to the discussion. Not just Senou-kun, Mishima-san too.”

Kampfer – Volume 3

Akane felt a chill run through her body. If she were transformed, she’d probably aim the trigger at Shizuku

, but at this moment she was weaker than a newborn fawn.

“Ah… I…”

“What’s wrong?”

“That… about the president…

” “If you can’t say what you want to say, how about you transform into Kämpfer?

”

Akane lowered her head. It seems she has her pride, and in this situation, she doesn’t seem to want to transforall.

Shizuku smiled weakly.

“Mishima-san has the same question as Senou-kun, right? They must think I’m up to  something.”

To a normal person, that’s what they’d think.

—But unfortunately, I’m not plotting anything. I just want the cultural festival to be a success.  —That sounds like a lie.

Speaking in Akane’s place.

—Well, if it’s a lie, that’s fine.

—What’s your connection to the meeting?

—I’m the student council president. I’ll be there too.

—That’s too bad.

It’s not that I hate Shizuku. It’s just that she’s a perfect student, so everyone goes to her and the meeting  is pointless. In fact, we should leave everything to her, but this way there’s no point in meeting.  —It would be better if everyone did.

—No, I need you to actively participate in the discussion.

Kampfer – Volume 3

It really feels like there’s nothing to hide.

Although I felt uneasy about not being able to shake that suspicious feeling, when Shizuku emphasized “I’m  leaving it to you” she left quickly.

The bell rings, marking the end of lunch. Thanks to Shizuku, my precious break had gone out the  window.

“Akane-chan, I’m going to the boys’ section.

” “Ah… Yes…”

She still seems down.

“Are you okay?

” “Yes… I’m not depressed… But, it’s just that… I feel like the president might be up to something…”  Akane spoke hesitantly. “You definitely think the same. Earlier, I was forced to play  the role of exposing the infiltrator in the student council. That girl doesn’t speak without reason. The fact that shto warn me means something’s going on.

” “Is she setting a trap with the meeting to completely defeat us?”

“I don’t think so… But, the student council president probably doesn’t like us…

Since she doesn’t like me that much either, I’m not disappointed. There’s just something strange about this.  ” “There’s no need to worry. Akane-chan, I’m a boy, so I trust the girls’ section.

” “Yes…”

The request that had been interrupted by Shizuku was accepted by her.

Back in class, I unilaterally said, “I feel sick, I’m going home.” There were no boos. Instead,  shouts of “I guessed right!” and “I guessed wrong!” echoed from all around. I later learned they were betting on”when Senou Natsuru, who calls himself weak, would go home.” The treasurer won the most.  I pretended to go home, but quickly returned to the boys’ section. Just like when I entered the girls’ section  , I walked through the library door with my ID card and transformed into a boy.

Halfway there. However, this transformation was uncomfortable. Although my height didn’t change, my line of  sight was the same, but I felt a strangeness right after transforming, mainly in the

chest area. I joined the boys’

2-4

class

. Class had already started, and the English teacher was staring

intently at me.

I tried to hide it with a forced smile, and the teacher turned back to the blackboard. Unlike the  girls’ section, there weren’t any bets about “when Natsuru would return,” but the reactions were along the lines ?” It was sad in a different way.

I sat down and quickly pulled out my textbook. Then, Higashida approached me.

“Hey, I need to talk to you.”

“I’m not available,”

I replied sharply. I feel like I’ve been talking to you all day since this morning. If

I turn into a girl, Shizuku will definitely catch me.

“Not now. After class.”

“I have a meeting. You should know that.”

“After I’m finished.”

I gave her an evasive answer to end the conversation. Speaking of Higashida, he definitely  wouldn’t be in the classroom. He’d be begging some cute girl outside to let him take pictures of her.  The class ended without incident. It wasn’t exactly reassuring in terms of whether I’d understood it  correctly. The next exam is sure to be a disaster.

Finally, it was time to leave. I dropped my bag behind and headed to the meeting room.  Several students from other classes were starting to arrive. They were unfamiliar faces. My circle of friends waextensive.

The lecture hall above the library was quite large, as its name suggested. Even though  representatives from all years and classes of both the male and female sections were meeting, there was still  plenty of space.

I sat down in a random seat. I spotted Akane from afar and tried to catch her eye, but she didn’t  look at me.

I felt somewhat disappointed. Soon, the student council board members entered. Of course,  Shizuku was in the center.

“Please take your seats, let’s begin.”

Shizuku moderated. It would be easier if she delegated, but this relaxed attitude was also appreciated.  “First of all, let’s talk about the deadline. It will be two weeks from today.”

She spoke calmly and concisely. About the deadline and the schedule. About the budget. The

Communication with the school, etc. I thought maybe she’d at least steal a glance at me, but she didn’t even  look. If she showed a cute side, maybe I… wouldn’t I fall for her?

Normally at this point, the bored boys would start to fall asleep, but thanks to

Shizuku’s presence, that didn’t happen. She probably didn’t want to make a bad impression as a  high school supermodel. There were a lot of people staring at her.

“…As for the main plan, it will mostly be delegated to each class. However, there will be a  preliminary evaluation, so please gather your class’s opinions this week and present them to the student counc” “Will there be a general event?”

one of the girls asked.

“Yes, there will be. A mock shop festival organized by the student council, and also a  beauty pageant.”

The conference room buzzed with excitement. Mostly the boys.

“Did we do it last year?

” “No, we’re starting this year.”

Despite the indifferent tone, the surprising news led to an increase in conversation.  The beauty pageant. Seitetsu Academy Beauty Contest. Explained in detail in a

special chapter of “Seitetsu Academy Hidden History Vol. 1.” According to that, during the

all-girls school era, this contest was very popular, as both appearance and morality were considered,  making winning a great honor. They were often called stars. Because of this, the contest was only for  in-house members, and even teachers were prohibited from entering. But when

the

school

separated for boys and girls, the element of simple entertainment became more prominent, and it was  said to have been canceled because it had become “corrupted.” Many of the current students don’t even knowa beauty contest ever existed.

“Uhm!”

One of the girls stood up. “Oh, it’s Akane.

” “The beauty contest is held during the cultural festival, right?

” “That’s right,” Shizuku replied. ”

It’s a project sponsored by the student council.”

“But… why all of a sudden?”

—The theme of this cultural festival is “tradition.” The old becomes new. We’ll not only revive the  beauty pageant, but also some events from the pre-war era.

However, these were things like traditional sewing or poetry readings. We

modern students don’t care much about them. Or rather, we only cared about the beauty pageant.

“It will be held during the cultural festival, but only students will be eligible to vote.

Non-students are prohibited from observing.

It seems they want us to be quiet.”

The boys were excited, but the girls seemed uneasy. They probably weren’t prepared  for something so sudden. Still, there should be some excited girls. These kinds of events are popular  with both boys and girls.

Akane sat down. Shizuku continued,

“Registration will be open until two days before the cultural festival. There won’t be any pre-selection.  We’ll give you more details the day before. Any questions?”

She probably meant general questions, but personally, I’m only interested in the

beauty pageant.

Kampfer – Volume 3

33

“Yes, yes, yes! Where will it be held?!”

“Is it allowed to recommend someone to apply?!

” “Is it okay to reserve a spot the day before?”

The boys spoke loudly and quickly, while the girls also had many questions. Almost everyone  was asking.

“The venue will be the girls’ section gymnasium. We’ll distribute tickets to those who wish to attend as  spectators.” Only self-nominations are allowed.

Shizuku answered the questions quickly, one after another. It’s amazing how she manages to hear all  those voices. The rumor that she’s the reincarnation of Prince Shotoku doesn’t seem so far  -fetched either.

“Not just self-promotion, but also recommendations,” a girl’s voice called out.

I looked over and was so surprised I almost jumped. The one speaking was Sakura-san.  One of the two great beauties of Seitetsu Academy, but for me, the only true beauty was Sakura-san. By the wgreat beauties, but I don’t want to mention the last one. Apparently, it’s a man who transforms  into a woman.

Anyway, the person I admired the most turns out to be the class president for the

cultural festival. How careless of me that my “Sakura-san sensor” hadn’t activated! The motivation that lay  dead deep in my heart was suddenly revived.

—Ara. Kaede, you don’t need recommendations, do you?

—She’s not talking about me. There’s someone I want to recommend.

—It’s forbidden for boys.

—I’m talking about a girl. But she doesn’t seem interested in this, so I want to recommend her.  Please.

How strange that Sakura-san is pleading like this. It seems she has a great fondness for that girl.

Kampfer – Volume 3

34

Shizuku looked thoughtful. Come on, she immediately responds with a yes to her request. If she were prime  minister, she would have already passed a law allowing everything Sakura says.

“It’s not desirable to have a proliferation of candidates, but…”

“Before, I thought it was just self-promotion.

” “…If you put it that way, it’s fine. ”

Shizuku nodded. ”

So we’ll allow recommendations as well. I’ll prepare the forms here, so those interested  can pick them up in the student council room.”

And so the general meeting ended.

As we left the meeting room, both boys and girls were excitedly talking. It’s said that  there are many beautiful girls at Seitetsu Academy. It remains “said” because due to the  school’s secrecy and strict prohibition of relationships between boys and girls, there are few who have seen thwhich made the only source of information Higashida’s “Beauty Research Club.” If  it were open to all students, it wouldn’t be surprising if excitement erupted.

Descending the stairs, there was Sakura-san waiting for me.

I felt flustered. None other than the woman of my dreams, a prominent beauty at Seitetsu Academy.  I couldn’t complain, even if I were killed by jealous boys for her waiting for me.

But despite that feeling, Sakura-san’s expression was truly cold.

“Natsuru-san,”

she said.

“Why are you laughing? You seem to be enjoying yourself.”

I was smiling at being able to talk to Sakura-san, but she rejected that feeling.

Sakura-san’s expression was stern.

“I already told you. I’m your rival. I won’t hand her over to you.

” “…Huh?”

Kampfer – Volume 3

35

“We won’t be friends like before.”

Despair overwhelmed me.

I want you to remember the diagram of human relationships at this point. Sakura-san likes me, but the  problem is that she’s in love with “me, being a woman.” Furthermore, she sees me as an enemy and recently edeclared herself my rival.

And that’s it. Since middle school, we were “high-ranking friends,” but it seems

we’re just acquaintances now. It’s a nightmare.

Ignoring that feeling, Sakura-san spoke with determination.

“I’m going out with that person no matter what. I’m not going to lose.”

Despite her determination, it wasn’t the time to say such things.

“But Sakura-san, she’s…”

“Whatever? Even though she likes you, you’re referring to her like that? Men are selfish.  ” “No, she likes women…

” “She isn’t. We went on a date. Although Natsuru-san might not know it.

I know. It was me. She was very confident.”

“Now I’m losing, but I’m sure she’ll notice me.

” “What…?”

“I’m confident.

This isn’t going well. No matter what I say, she won’t understand.

Sakura-san is now completely in love and determined. Besides, I’m the one being rivaled  . The situation is a total mess. If she doesn’t get confused by this, she’ll be an enlightened religious monk.  I feel like crying. Just six months ago I was an ordinary high school student, why have I  been hit with this ordeal? ”

“I’ve thought of something…”

Kampfer – Volume 3

36

Ignoring my despair, Sakura-san speaks.

“Even though she’s so wonderful, many people don’t know her.” So, after everyone meets her,  I’ll proudly go out with her.

—Huh!? Didn’t you say you didn’t want the rumor of homosexuality to spread…?  —I’ve realized that being negative won’t help. If I go out with the prettiest girl in Seitetsu, everyone  will be jealous. Once it’s approved, no one will be able to complain.

—Really…?

—I’m going to recommend Senou-san for the beauty contest.

I literally felt like I’d been hit with a construction hammer.

Sakura-san intends to enter a girl in the contest. A while ago, she even consulted  Shizuku about the recommendation.

But how could I possibly enter a beauty contest? It’s not like I’m going to appear masculine,  but it’s the first time I’ve ever assumed a feminine appearance!

In the first place, how did I end up like this when I just became a woman?

—If she enters, I’ll definitely win.

—…

—So I’ll put all my feelings on the line. I’m definitely going to make the most beautiful woman in

Seitetsu mine.

—…

—Get ready.

After saying this unilaterally, he left me there paralyzed with surprise and left.  I remained on the stair landing for a while. Time seemed to have stopped. It’s like a  manga villain technique, but it doesn’t make sense since it stops arbitrarily without my consent.  Besides, it didn’t actually stop. Akane came looking for me and I realized that.  —Natsuru-san…?

Kampfer – Volume 3

37

She was looking at me with a very suspicious expression.

“Akane-chan…”

“What’s wrong?”

I explained what had just happened. Akane was surprised, her mouth hanging open in an “O” shape. ”  Is Natsuru-san going to participate in the beauty pageant…?”

“I don’t want to participate.

” “But… Natsuru-san is beautiful…”

She seemed a little disappointed. But I wasn’t disappointed at all. “I

don’t want to stand out. I want to live quietly in a corner.

” “But Sakura-san is recommending you, right?

” “Yes…

” “Can’t you refuse?” “I don’t

know…

By the way, we had the option to withdraw. There should be a system like that to prevent  joke recommendations. I mean, I hope there is.

” “You should ask the president.”

“Yes, I guess…

Although I don’t want to bow, there’s no other option. If I bow in the

student council president’s office, maybe things will work out.

” “Could you come with me to see the president next time?”

“Uh… me too?”

“Yes. Wait while I go get my shoes.”

I quickly left the library.

Kampfer – Volume 3

Upon returning to the boys’ section, there was hardly anyone there. Since there are no evening classes, it’s notbeing there, but it’s not like the school is a place to linger either.

However, when I returned to the classroom, Higashida was still there.

“Were you really waiting for me?”

“Yes. You’re late.”

There was a certain expectation on his face. He immediately asked me,

“So, what happened?

” “What happened?”

“The meeting. They’re supposed to be having a beauty pageant, right?

” How did he know?

Higashida smiled and whispered,

“I told you before. We also have agents infiltrated in the student council. We made some arrangements  for the beauty pageant. Although on the surface it’s presented as a student council proposal,  it’s actually an event of the Beauty Research Club.”

I couldn’t say anything; I was astonished. It turns out this guy was even infiltrating the  student council to go after pretty girls.

Since it’s a “beauty contest,” it’s only natural that pretty girls would participate. This must be a  very rare opportunity for Higashida. Is this why he said he had something to discuss?  —It’s once a year, and this might be the only time. The Beauty Research Club is going to  give it their all.

Higashida was excited, even wringing his hands. I’ll definitely have to withdraw. It would be the It would be worse if not only him, but other guys took pictures of me too.

—I see. Do your best. It doesn’t matter if you don’t.

—This is Senou’s assignment.

Is this guy listening to someone else?

Kampfer – Volume 3

39

—As the special advisor to the Beauty Research Club, I want you to report on the

beauty contest. Any insignificant detail can become useful information.

—Well, there are insignificant things…

What will I be participating in?

—That will suffice. Report without filtering.

—Idiot. I don’t want to do it. I was forced to be the class representative without my knowledge. Don’t put any mstrange burdens on me. You should use the student council spy.

—I plan to suspend activities for a while. The president is very perceptive, so if we’re discovered  before the cultural festival, we’re finished.

It’s right to suspend them. Shizuku is a woman who knows everything. Even the infiltrated spy could be being  manipulated.

—You can remain calm, even if you’re discovered.

—Don’t be overconfident. The president is ruthless.

“You have a pretty good reputation in the girls’ section, right?

” “Not that I have much of one.”

“There’s a lot of work. Because of the limited trust, we have to keep our staff to a minimum.  ” “I’m not the most trustworthy, am I?”

“I trust you. That’s why, besides gathering information, there’s something else I want you to do.  ” I don’t know why “that,” but Higashida said it in a serious tone.

“I want you to dig a hole.

Huh?

” “What’s up with that?

” “A tunnel. There have been too many inspections of the student council lately, and the  means of connection between the girls’ and boys’ sections has been lost. I want to have this in case of emerge

Kampfer – Volume 3

Perhaps I need an explanation. At this school, the boys’ and girls’ sections are strictly  separated. There’s a high wall marking the border, topped with barbed wire. The legal way in and  out is through the door in the library. That was my trick.

Here at school, there’s also a clandestine club for normal relationships between boys and girls, trying to  move around without the school noticing. Higashida is also a member of that group, and he  ‘s passed me some contact information.

“It’s crucial to have that; not having it makes a huge difference,” Higashida says earnestly. ”  Yeah, I understand, but why do I have to dig?”

“Because of you, several routes have been closed. It was a problem at the leaders’ meeting. My arguments hatheir limits.

Who did I ask for those arguments? And why is my name even being mentioned at that leaders’ meeting?”  “That’s right. There’s a tunnel that’s only half-dug. You have to dig it responsibly.

” “I can’t take on that responsibility. Basically, you’re saddling me with something annoying, aren’t you?  ” “If you dig it, you’ll have the privilege of using that route freely.

” “I’m not interested.

With my ID card, I can come and go as I please.” However, Higashida placed his hand on my shoulder.  “If you help me, the route will be open again. If you help me.”

Tears welled in his jealous eyes, such a strong obsession with a girl. Without realizing it, I nodded. Well, after , it’s true that it’s my fault. After parting ways with Higashida, I headed to the library.  Akane was sitting in the dark library. She stood up when she saw me. “Ah, Natsuru-san.” I’m glad to see you…alone with the darkness enveloping everything. Let’s go home soon.

—I have something to do.

—Something?

—Dig a tunnel.

The girl with glasses looks at me in surprise.
