Chapter 209 – Glasses Boy’s Decision: The Path of the Assassin or the Other Path

“Now, based on your own judgment, we will divide the classroom. Choose whether to pursue the path of an assassin or the other path. Choose the course you desire.”

The second day of our life at the Tower of Bryne began in earnest.

After Instructor Evanesque’s explanation, we had to make a choice.

There was a quick rundown before we had to decide, but it was mostly stuff we already knew.

The assassin path involves training as an assassin.

Right now, there aren’t many assassination jobs available, but it looks like the focus will be on teaching us how to kill and carry out covert operations.

Honestly, I’m not interested in learning how to take someone’s life, but I’m really intrigued by covert operations.

I often do undercover activities on my own, but if I could refine my skills with professional techniques, there’s a significant part of me that hopes for that. It’s intriguing.

As for the other path…

Here, we will simply develop methods to fight monsters, completely different from assassination.

It’s like taking the perfected techniques of assassins developed over many years and applying them directly to monster hunting.

I think I’ll go with this one after all.

While I’m quite curious about the covert operations in the assassin course, I don’t have any need to learn how to take someone’s life. It’s not something I require.

So, if you opt for the assassin path, head to the room next door, and if you choose the other  path, you can remain here.

Since Instructors Yorgo and Sorichika are absent, they’re likely waiting in that room.

“May I ask a question?”

Hydra raised his hand.

With a nod from Instructor Evanesque, Hydra stood up.

“For those who are still uncertain or hesitant at this point, what should they do? I don’t believe pressuring them into a decision is the right approach.”

Ah, as expected of Hydra.

After hearing Instructor Evanesque’s explanation, I found myself growing slightly curious about the covert operations taught in the assassin course.

Perhaps I could skip the lessons on killing and concentrate entirely on honing my covert operations skills.

Such thoughts crossed my mind as well.

Once Hydra’s question is over, maybe I’ll ask something too.

This is certainly a significant decision. But I can’t afford to stand out or complain.

“I mentioned it briefly yesterday, but as long as the assignments don’t overlap, you’re free to choose either course.

In other words, although I don’t highly recommend it, changing courses is also allowed.”

Huh, so you can switch halfway through?

“However, if you do decide to switch, you might encounter new learning materials or assignments that could disrupt what you’ve already learned and accumulated so far.

Furthermore, changing courses could potentially put you at a disadvantage compared to those who initially chose that path, resulting in delays in your progress. Therefore, while I don’t encourage it, changes are allowed. Having someone lacking motivation lingering around can be bothersome to other candidates.”

…I see.

Those who join midway will naturally fall behind those who were already there. So, while changes aren’t encouraged, they’re allowed.

So, if you’ve lost motivation for that course, it’s better to move on quickly so as not to inconvenience others around you.

That’s probably the gist of it.

“…Looks like you’re not the only one who’s unsure.”

Instructor Evanesque glanced around at us, sensing that some of us were uncertain. Even Hydra himself appeared to be undecided after posing the question.

“Let’s do this then. First, stick with the course you initially chose. Then, for a while, you’ll have the flexibility to switch between courses. It doesn’t matter which one you choose; we’ll adjust the curriculum accordingly. We were already planning to have joint training sessions for a few days, so it’s wise to see how they unfold before making a decision. We’ll revisit this later, so you just need to make up your mind by then.”

So, it’s sort of a trial period where you can experiment and make your decision.

That sounds promising. Maybe that’s the best approach.

To be honest, I’m somewhat undecided. I’m not keen on the idea of taking lives, but I’ve become intrigued by what the assassin course entails.

“Alright, for now, let’s split up temporarily. Those who wish to join the assassin course, go to the room next door for guidance from Mr. Yorgo and Ms. Sorichika. If you choose the other course, stay here.”

Several people stood up and went to the next room.

Let’s see, those who went were Hydra, Cherry, Shuren, Caro-something, Marion, and Eorazel.

Hydra, who is already a leader among the candidates and excels academically.

Cherry, who has always aspired to become a strong assassin.

Shuren, the young Eastern boy.

Caro-something, who is well-versed in pharmacy.

Marion, a gender-neutral girl who’s hard to distinguish as either male or female.

And the Prince-like Eorazel.

These are the six who opted for the assassin path.

Out of the fourteen candidates, six decided to switch. If one more had joined them, it would have been exactly half.

…Is it expected or unexpected that this many decided to go?

Well, even though they’ve said there are no assassin jobs, it could still be unexpected.

Even though they were told there are no career opportunities, they decided to switch.

I wonder what criteria they used to make their decision.

But then again, since we don’t know each other well yet, it’s hard to make that judgment.

I guess I’m a bit surprised by Hydra and Marion’s decisions after all.
