My Glasses Will Be Able to Conquer the Whole World, I Suppose
248 – Zombie Legion Extermination Operation 3
The forest infested with zombies stretches widely with a thin density.
The day before the operation.
During the reconnaissance phase, Eil and Trawllul counted roughly and estimated that there were about five hundred zombies.
What is visible from the surroundings is merely superficial.
In reality, it wouldn’t be surprising if the zombies inside the forest were referred to as a “legion”.
Well, it might be more accurate to say they were simply standing still rather than rampaging.
In any case, there were a lot of them.
The entire monster-hunting team consisted of fewer than ten people, yet the number of zombies easily exceeded a hundred.
This clearly indicates that hunting them one by one would be an undeniably inefficient and unrealistic approach.
Moreover, as the number of battles increases, the risk to their safety also rises.
The sheer violence of numbers cannot be underestimated.
No matter how weak each one is, dealing with this many is beyond the capability of a small group.
How to respond to the overwhelming quantity of zombies?
This is surely the key point that needs to be considered for this operation.
—Eil, Trawllul, and Chace were in their designated positions.
They were on the branches of a tree.
Below each of them, there were over a hundred zombies huddled together.
Leather bags suspended in the air—these contained Sound Bombs, which intermittently emitted noise to gather the zombies in the area. In other words, it was bait made of sound.
Facing the marshland, they gathered the zombies in a triangular formation at three points on the outskirts of the forest.
Eil was positioned on the right, Trawllul on the left, and Chace at the back in the center.
The sun gradually began to set.
As the forest grew darker, the three above listened to the moans of the zombies below, trying to drag them into the darkness, anxiously waiting for that moment—
Boom boom boom boom… meow.
Receiving the signal of “meow” heard simultaneously from a different location, the three began to move.
That was the sound that was blown into the last of the Sound Bombs, serving as a signal. The timing for the signal was coordinated.
Although it was rather deflating to have Trawllul’s voice recorded, there was no mistake that it was the signal.
Eil, Trawllul, and Chace climbed down from the tree and started running, drawing the zombies’ attention.
From here on, the three of them would serve as bait to lure in the zombies.
“—Nya ha ha!”
Running, Trawllul laughed.
It was the worst.
It was so bad that laughing was the only option left.
He enjoyed a good chase, but this was the worst kind of chase he had ever experienced.
Death was literally chasing after him right now.
More than a hundred zombies were pursuing Trawllul from right behind.
If he got caught and even slightly slowed down, he would be devoured in an instant.
And then, he would be completely consumed.
In a flash.
Well, it was just like usual hunting.
Trawllul was also a hunter.
At any time, the hunters can become the hunted.
Being chased by the danger of death was not particularly rare.
“—No touching!”
As a fast zombie broke through the crowd and reached out, Trawllul nimbly dodged as if she had eyes in the back of her head.
—The order imposed on them was, “Don’t run too fast. Make sure to lead them.”
If she ran at full speed, she could easily shake off the zombies in an instant, but she was instructed not to do that.
Following the markers engraved with marker stones on various trees, they headed through the forest towards the marshland.
This was in line with what they had confirmed just before the operation.
With this, she could run without a moment’s hesitation about where to go.
“—Yup!”
She also dodged a zombie that suddenly leaped out from the side.
It seemed they were nearing an area that hadn’t been covered by the sound bait.
—Well, it was a simple job.
That’s precisely why Trawllul was chosen for this role.
No one asked her to do anything beyond her capability.
Thus, she could comply with the team’s intentions, even if it meant pushing herself a bit.
And that’s why hunting with this team was quite enjoyable.
Like Trawllul, Eil and Chace were also running while leading zombies.
“—Hey!”
There was a slight time lag, but the moment all three exited the forest was almost simultaneous.
Trawllul cheerfully called out—though Eil and Chace had no time to respond. The restriction of not running too fast or too slow was quite tricky.
The marshland was wide and shallow.
With some dead trees and rocks scattered about, it was an open area.
There were no problems running, but they needed to be cautious of occasionally slipping in the mud.
The three entered the marsh from slightly different directions and began running toward each other to converge.
The zombies trailing closely behind also merged with a different group led by the three, forming one large horde.
The number exceeded five hundred zombies.
Some fast ones broke away, and due to the already cramped conditions, some stumbled and fell. It seemed there were also some slower zombies.
In any case, it was quite chaotic on that side too.
Still, they managed to gather a considerable number of zombies.
“—I’m going in to support! If you think you’re going to get hit, dodge!”
With Harriatan’s voice coming from far ahead, stones began to fly one after another.
The stones thrown by him hit the fast zombies that were bursting out of the group, halting them in their tracks.
The bait running ahead had no time to notice this, but the nearly vanishing presence of threats from behind made them feel psychologically at ease.
“We’re almost there! Lisse!!”
Eil shouted.
Lisse, who was near Harriatan ahead, raised his right arm high, timing the signal—
“—Now!!”
At Lisse’s strong voice, hundreds of zombies leaped into the air all at once.
